So, the other day as I was pulling up to my garage, I thought I heard an engine knock… just at idle. Now, my driveway is rough stone, and I had just heard the tail pipe scrape a bit. I shut off engine, popped hood, and restarted. Nothing. Ran normal…
So I wasn’t sure if I had kicked up something (stick whatever as my garage is under construction and there is stuff laying around).
I pulled into garage, everything sounded normal.
Still, that bearing noise (almost like rod knock) bothers me.
So, I changed oil, and cut open the oil filter. First time I ever did this, there are some small shiny bits…. I had ran this oil on the engine dyno and we beat the snot out of it, tested how high to rev for peak power; didn’t do much past 7000 on forged rotating assembly as power fell off above that.
Anyhow, can’t duplicate the noise, but attached is the video I took. I cut open with snips… the pleated filter kinda glimmers and here is video of bottom of filter. Okay won’t let me post video, but here is the worst of it.
So question is, is any “stuff” in filter normal, and is it normal for bearing noise to stop if there is a spun main or??? I’ve only ever experienced this once on a stroked forged internals 496 supercharged engine in a boat. Once it had rod knock it didn’t stop knocking…
