Axle Studs for Moser Axles

EDIT: I meant for the title to say AXLE STUDS, not lug nuts.

So I purchased some Moser axles with 3" wheels studs. Obviously I do not need 3" studs for my street car. The studs are basically high grade hex headed bolts threaded into the axles.

So I cut the bolts/studs down to 1 3/4 (stock) and figured all would be fine. Well after looking at it more I realized that the head of these studs will actually HIT the ABS sensor as the axles turn. Hell the ABS tone ring may not even fit on them with these 'studs'.

So what are my options? Are moser axles originally threaded for studs? Aren't the stock studs pressed it?

Argg, I would like to get this figured out before the weekend. I need to get these things installed.

I can get pics posted after work this evening. They were 'new in box' purchased. So there is a chance they have been tampered with prior to me getting my hands on them.

the head of the bolt shouldnt be sticking out any further than the stock ones. I have moser 3in studs with no problems. mine are the press in style though.


stupid question, did you put the axle in the tube to find out they hit? if so, you didnt have the axle pushed all the way in with the slide pin out of the carrier did you?

No I have not attempted the install yet. I am trying to resolve the issue before hand so I don't run into any down time. The studs that that came with my axles are: 13/16" hex headed (1/2 x 20 & 3" long = I cut them down to 1 3/4") with lock washers. I will have pictures in a few as I am about to leave work.

From what I can tell the head of the bolts will be in the direct path of the ABS sensor when installed.

I have a feeling someone tapped the holes in the moser axles. I don't think moser taps theirs at all. So with that being said I am not sure what to do. I doubt pressing the stock studs into tapped holes are going to do the trick

These probably won't work with the ABS sensor. Call Moser, see what they say.

Here are some photos. I thought about removing the lock washers and grinding down the head of the bolt some for clearance but I am not sure if that is the best way to go about this. Any ideas? I also thought about trying to press a stock stud into the threaded holes. Again, not sure on how well that will work.

Damn, just curious where did you find that info? I may have to give them a call.

Sometimes it just doesn't pay to save a few bucks. Oh well, live and learn.

Moser does offer screw in studs, They are all pressed in unless you order the screw in style like you have. I have never seen them in a 05+ car, but i have seen a set of the screw in type in the 94-04s before. They do work but are VERY close to the abs sensor.

Got it figured out. Thanks for the help fellas.

I tinkered around with them at work today. Found some similar studs to my stangs (1/2 x 20 x 1 3/4 press in style). After some measurements, I found that the tapped holes are actually smaller than the holes that would be present for a 'press in style' stud. So I drilled out one of the threaded holes in the moser axle and pressed in the axle stud I mentioned above. VOILA!!! It worked perectly.

So for future reference for anyone that ends up with screw in style moser axles. You can drill out the tapped holes and press in a regular style axle stud (stock).

I feel better now!
