What do you look for when you're thinking about purchasing a built short/longblock.

Block- Compression, parts going in, stock ci, 298/302 stroker, big bore, big bore stroker, builder

Heads- Valvetrain, cams, builder, valves, flow

For compression I'll need something that'll work with 91/93 octane. Now correct me if I'm wrong but the lower the compression the more fuel friendly it'll be. Means I won't need race fuel and such.

It depends on what your goals and uses of the car are going to be. Is it a daily driver? Is it a track only car? Is it a mix? How much power are you looking for. Lots of questions need to be answered before the majority of us can give you a detailed answer

I am a firm believer in overbuilding in these cases. So if i want to run 10psi of boost ill build to hold 20, if i want 500rwhp ill build for 800rwhp. I like a cushion built in.

Yeah I think that's the case. Lower CR is more boost friendly as well. As far as general specs go with fuel I'm not positive. But there are some guys that can give you exact details for sure.

Do you plan on upping the boost with the built shortblock?

I was going for a 9:6 CR with my 302 and Paxton but I've seen alot if guys staying more towards 9:3 and lower. My engine builder was also an idiot too, so I think that 9:6 was a little too much. I don't know much on the 298s, did you talk to
JDM yet? I see they did your tune.

My goal was 500 - 550rwhp, a mix DD and track and not needing to go faster than 11.5 ET since I'm not putting a cage in the car. Went with the Livernois 298 stroker and per JDMs recommendation, 9.7:1 CR.

Right now my ride is a DD but I go to the track when I can. Powerwise I'm not sure since this is my first car that I'll get serious with about modding. I'm like you that would probably over build. Probably nothing more 550-600hp/tq since everyone says its a handful on the streets.

Once I get a built motor I'll probably put the Roush TVS overdrive crank and stock 3" pulley back on and that'll make around 17psi. Haven't talked to JDM yet since I'm stationed in Korea and just trying to get a game plan going once it decides to let go.

At the moment I don't want to put a cage in the car. What kind of power are you putting down with the stroker and stock heads/cams

Oh ok, well JDM just did a 302 Techno setup on one of our members cars here and it turned out badass. You should send him a PM and get some details.

Around 530rwhp at 12-13 psi. I can get more out of it, but don't need it. Already running 11.7 @ 120mph, so my trap speed is there for the 11.5 goal. Just need to work on my 60'. Unfortunately I won't get to race this summer as I'm heading to Kabul in a couple of weeks until Jan 11.

Yeah I dont see an upgraded clutch of flywheel in the list of mods in the signature. Thats a must for the kind of power your aiming for.

Like I said I'm stationed in Korea and just had enough time to install the s/c. I know a clutch will be needed

What compression should I look into. I know the lower the better it is for FI but can you go to low and hurt the engine power wise.

Remember our cars are 9.8 CR stock. With you having a PD blower I'd think a little bit lower CR would be your best bet. You wont need the extra power out of boost because you have instant boost whenever. 9.0-9.3 would be my choice, and with a centri 9.4-9.7

I wouldn't go any lower than 9.6:1. This can be achieved with a readily available off the shelf piston.

Then don't worry about strokers or big bore engines. Put rods/pistons in it and go on about your merry way.

How much boost and/or Hp can you get away with on just changing the rods and pistons? I got greety last weekend. Turned up to boost to 11-12psi and think I might have lost a piston or something else...

It's all fun and games until you break it!!!!

The limit will no longer be the rods/pistons but the fuel system. Typically, if you keep the rpms down under 7000 the stock crank will live just fine. Most aftermarket rods/pistons are rated to 1000 hp (crank) so you would be fine.
