Whipple HO calibration 2006 GT

Have had what i thought was a pinging problem ever since my ford racing whipple kit was installed (using the calibration that came with the kit). Ford has sent me a few different tunes, each of which helped but never got rid of all the noise. Several people have listened to it and all thought it was pinging. Someone from Ford took a ride with me last weekend at Carlisle to listen to the noise. Turns out it is some kind of combustion that sounds like pinging but isn't and is not harmful to the engine. Guy from Ford said he drove Ed Badillo's car (guy who developed the calibration) and it makes the same sound but the car has over 45000 miles on the kit with no problems. I mean if you hear this sound you would bet your life it was pinging. Anyone ever heard of this before or can someone explain it? A technical explanation would be helpful. At this point I am trusting what the guy from Ford says...never heard of Ed Badillo before but supposedly he is some calibration Guru and used to be a Ford calibrator. I must say so far I have beat the piss out of the car (6500 miles on kit, 42000 on the car total) and have no engine issues...sounds and runs excellent. Ford guy also said they have never had an engine failure on the calibration that comes with the kit.

Get it to a good tuner with a dyno and don't rely on what "some guy" from Ford said.

If it sounds like "pinging" then that is what it is. If they sent you different files and it helped then that is detonation or "pinging". If ford calibrations are so good then why is there a reflash for almost every car on the road every 6 months? Just saying.

Like the guy above said, take it to someone and have it custom tuned.

I had a little rattle when my whipple was installed with the FRPP tune. I tried using the 91 tune (with 93 gas) and it was still there. Try adding 100 octane and it was still there. Had multiple people ride in my car, some thought is sounded like pinging, some thought it didn't. I ended up getting it dynotuned to see if that took care of it. Still rattles a little, but the tuner was skeptical if it was actual pinging or not.

Car has lived for 2 years now, with a ton of track time and getting the shit ran out of it. If that rattle was pinging, it would be a miracle that my motor is still alive.

Just my experience.

Interesting. When I ran the whipple/ford tune, I never had any odd noises, but I never ran the 3.375 pulley either (3.625" cause I'm a pussy).

The pulleys are weird on gen2s, im running a 3.375" but only seeing 8# of boost on my gauge. It came with a 3.125" and on the dyno it maxed around 11.2-11.6...

I'm running the 3.5" pulley, ran the ford tune for about one year with no problems no pinging. The ford tune made made 472RWHP and was real fat (Way conservative).

Maybe your psi is low because of the alignment/slipping issue???

I made 10psi with the 3.5" pulley, its a gen2 as well. We also got our cars dyno'd at the same place, so it's interesting to see how differently our setups are producing boost.

Edit: I am on completely stock exhaust though, so we ill see some difference there

I have the same noise with my whipple, I was told something similar by my dealer, he said that all of them they have done here in phoenix( and its a crap load) make the same noise and not one failure.

I haven't dyno tuned it yet either cause its still under full warranty but I will when that is up and see if it makes a difference.

Isn't there any tuners/calibrators out there that can explain this combustion noise. I believe it isn't detonation...if it was my motor would have blown up by now.

No explanation. Combustion noises that sound like pinging are almost certainly pinging.

Best test would be to run a full load of high octane fuel and see if it changes or stops. Or take several degrees of advance out of the calibration and see if it changes or stops. Assuming your wot a/f ratio is also ok at all points of course.

I hope that's the case, but my trap speed would say i am around 480ish at the wheels though. I just have an O/R H, stock manifolds still. Could maybe lose me a pound at the most.

When I was at the SCT class last year we tested and tuned a 06 with the whipple on it and it didn't make any pinging noises. Car made great power and I still have that tune in my files. It made in that 450rwhp range.

tried high octane, also had three other tunes from frpp which added fuel and took out timing...there was some improvement with the tunes but the noise was still audible. did notice a drop in fuel mileage and power dropped slightly. Put the original tune back in. There has to be some combustion genius out there who can give and explanation
