4.10's being installed

Hey guys, I just dropped my car off to get the 4.10's installed.
Thanks Jarod for the solid hook up on the package deal.
So now I've read a bunch of posts about how to treat the gears for the "break in" period after install. The problem is that there seem to be conflicting opinions. I would really like to hear from people who either do this install or people that actually have them done as far as how to break these gears in right. Would be interested if anyone has done this wrong too so that I can learn from anyone elses mistakes.
Any help is appreciated.

I had 4:10's installed about a year ago, I never did a "break in" period personally and there is no whine from the rear.

But I've read of others having def issues with it too...

You will love the gears, car will wind up much quicker!

I could never find a straight answer for a "break in period" so I drove it for 50 or so miles (and 2 heat cycles) and then launched it.

You will be happy with 4.10s, no doubt.

I need to get rid of mine...

Why are you getting rid of yours? Are you changing your set up?

Now ive had two sets of 4.10s installed one in my old 04 GT and one in my 07 GT.

the installer of the ones that went in the 04 was an old school guy, really knows ford rear ends and older mustangs. set mine up and they were dead quiet, no whine no noise at all. he said do three heat cycles at varying speeds. one for about 15-20 minutes at low to medium speeds let the car cool off. go out again at medium speeds for about 30 minutes let car cool off. go out one last time at med to highger speeds for about 30 to 45 minutes let car cool off. then go beat the hell out of it. no noise or problems ever.

the 07 the installer said go beat the hell out of it as soon as you leave the shop. Well I didnt exactly do that or the full heat cycle like the last set however I still took it easy for around 200 miles. and so far no problems with the gears themselves (install was a different story but now its all good)

so i guess it depends on what you want to

Yep. Going with a Turbo set up, so Ill be looking for either 3.31 or 3.55 in the next month or 2.

Being a tech, I personally feel that it can't 'hurt' to get a few heat cycles on them and allowing them to mesh before beating on them. But I could not tell you that it is 100% necessary. Everyone has there own way of doing things. Every person you ask will probably have a different opinion. Hence the results from your research. I drove mine easy for a couple days (a dozen or so heat cycles). Some folks say "well you don't see race cars getting their gears broken in". And they are correct, but at the same time they are not expecting race cars to have quiet gears for years to come.

On customers cars, I drive them easy on the test drive for a few miles. Let them cool down and send them on there way. Obviously I cannot do a few days worth of heat cycles. The service writer asks them to take it easy on them for a couple days though. I have yet to have a noisey gear install, but I have not done all that many. I think I am up to about 15 or so. Only been doing them for a few years. My most interesting was a Cadillac CTS, what a PITA!

I will say that gear noise comes from the install 99% of the time, IMO. I have had to fix a few cars that some have tried to do them by their self. If they are not setup properly it doesn't matter how much you try to break them in, it's going to make noise!

had SMS racing install 3.73s in my first mustang back in the day...no whine. had them install 4.10s in my (ex) wifes GT...no whine

had a shop in NOLA install 4.10s in my 05 GT...no whine

had gearheads here in TX install my 4.10s over a year ago....no whine.

all were Ford Racing ring and pinions

Well they are in. Tim at Mr. Norms here in N. IL said to beat the crap out of it from the parking lot. I didnt exactly do that but I did take a nice ride and punched it a couple times never going over 4500 rpm or so. As far as gears whinning what should I listen for. Tim knows his stuff and is known for solid work so Im not all that concerned about it, but I would like to know if this is something that I would notice. My exhaust is pretty freakin loud so I dont hear much besides that.

Most noticeable with the windows up and radio off. Noise is a hum/whine on either accel, decal or tip in while cruising, depends on what's out of spec. Usually worst at 45-50 mph.

If there is going to be noise, it is usually noticeable right after or soon after the install.

I bought everything from jarrod on the board for $260 and install was less than half what they quoted you. So ya, I would say they are bending you over.

I could try to call the guy I dealt with about this and see if I can negotiate it lower somehow. Doubt it would work though. I did tell him I could get the parts for less than 300 and he said that would be the best way to go. They wanted $260 for the ring/pinion alone! This was all FRPP parts BTW.
