Hey everyone,
I'm planning on changing my single to a dual exhaust. What's the best way to go about it and which mufflers sound the best?

My plan is this,
Get a X or H pipe and make it dual from that and get some Walker Ultra Turbo mufflers on it.
Good or bad idea?

Sound is subjective...what sounds good to you is what you should aim for! I went with the newtakeoff true dual kit for mine and I love it, and recommend it!

start with the dual conversion, PYPES, Magnaflow and FRPP makes the kit. Most come with take off GT mufflers. The kit runs about $300 and can be done in your garage. With an X pipe, which these come with, you'll probably want a chambered muffler. But maybe not. Get the 2 1/2" duals on with some good mufflers. Then start listening to other cars. You'll find your way.

gt dual take offs probably the cheapest. pypes sells just the x pipe then you would just need driverside gt mid pipe reuse your pass side mid pipe and would need a second set of exhaust hangers pypes sells those too.

they do sell just the X, but since the driver's side over axle is 2 1/4"" and it has a big dent in it it's best to buy the 2, 2 1/2" over axle pipes with the X. Pypes has a true dual conversion kit for about $3 bills. Comes with GT takes offs, which I already had when I put stingers on the GT. Shipping is spendy though so I bought a kit of Pypes without the GT muffs from an e-bay guy. Paid $250 for the whole thing shipped. Came with pass side exhaust hangers, clamps and instructions. Sawzall off the V6 pipes prior to the Y. Slip the larger 2 1/2" pipes over the cut ends, and clamp it all up. Sounds great, quiet-ish inside and a good tone about 20 behind.

A 60* V6 doesn't really need a crossover, whether it's the X or H variety. What I'm doing with mine is I bought a pair of take off Bullitt mufflers for $125, but I've seen regular GT take off's for around $40. I went to NAPA and picked up a Walker/Dynomax left side GT mid pipe which cost $50, I also ordered the Pypes hangers I needed for the left muffler. My plan is to cut the stock pipe just ahead of the Y, then have a muffler shop bend a pair of pipes to connect that to the mid pipes. Should be pretty simple and cheap.

The only reason it's not done yet is I'm real close to taking my car to the shop for a GT500 rear bumper swap. Knowing that's in the near future I didn't want to make an exhaust cut out in my otherwise perfect condition stock bumper, but adding up the parts for this approach I figure a dual exhaust can be completed for under $200. Mine will be under $300 but that's with buying the Bullitt mufflers.

sounds like a good plan, good luck. Post up your opinion of the sound when you're done. Personally I like the X pipe for sound. We definitely picked up, or got back some power from going to an X and chambered mufflers switching from a Violator. And the drone, it was enough to make you want to jam your head into a vat of boiling oil and throw yourself off a cliff after an hour at freeway speeds.

I had a pair of GT take offs, I spent $250 for the complete Pypes true dual conversion. A sawzall and a couple hours and I was done. Beware, most of the V6's have holes for the rear muffler mount, but they're not tapped.

there are different GT mufflers. The automatic and convertible versions are a little quieter. Or you could go to a Bullitt mufler, or GT500 mufflers. Magnaflow makes a nice sounding chambered muffler, but so do 6 other companies. People have had good luck with resonators in front of a non-chambered muffler. Or try going to an H-pipe with straight through mufflers. It's all so subjective it's impossible to pick a muffler for someone else. A V6 will never sound like a V8, so that's not a sound to shoot for, it won't happen. Best bet is to listen to as many as you can, talk to as many people with set ups you're interested in as you can and go to as many Mustang shows or rallies and listen, talk and try stuff.

Yea I know that my ol v6 will never sound like a v8 and thats fine, not what I'm aiming for I had some two chambers on and I didn't like the tinny sound and the drone inside the car was abit too much, just want the good sound outside and no drone inside and keep the good performance it gives as I drive this car year round 100 miles a day five days a week, my two chambers gave a nice rumble at idle but bad drone at cruising speed. Utube sound tracks just don't work, so your saying the GT 500 or bullits would give me what I'm looking for? or how about the Pypes race pro's?

I don't know really what sound you're looking for. In my opinion, the chambered mufflers will sound best w/an X-pipe, while an H-pipe will not sound nearly as raspy if you have a straight thru muffler type, ie; Violators, Magnapacks, etc. Our V6 has a X pipe and GT manual take offs. I think it sounds awesome, no drone inside and a healthy exhaust note from behind. But then not everyone will like what I like.

So, I would try some different types of chambered mufflers. I don't know which ones you have now, so I can't guess what will be louder. You may have the GTB, or manual trans Ford parts on there now. But maybe you have the GTA or auto/vert mufflers. Bullitt muffs will be louder, I think the GT500 has the same parts as the Bullitts. I have Steeda stingers on the GT, they sound awesome but never heard a V6 with stingers, so I dunno. I went from Violators, which sucked on the V6, but sound good on the V8s to GT take offs. Now I like driving the car again.

what do you think shipping would be to zip 83210, from what I'm getting the 5 speed muffs are louder I'm sure the ones I have on there now are from an auto cause they are real quiet, they sound about the same as turbo muffs that I got rid of. At idle they sound like air escapeing and yes I have had every thing checked and everything is welded and clamped up tight.

the sound I'm lookin for is a good rumble at idle and when I get on it (without that tinny flowmaster sound) and no drone inside, I had on some Thrush two chambered muffs and they had a good idle but tinny at high rpms and a bad inside drone they gave you a brain pain, it had that sertin tone that was not good inside the car. so give me your best quess givin the info I gave ya, cause changing muffs that many times is gettin expensive. I do thank all of you for your help.

Pypes has them for the best price and they ship right away. I think you'll like the GT manual mufflers. Remember, stand back about 20-30 feet to get the real sound. They're quietish up close (and in the car). My wife hated hers when I first put them on. I walked her back about 10 yards and revved it, then she was a believer.
