My 2006 V6 has only 87K miles; undercarriage is rustfree, but the single exhaust is getting scary (I've had exhaust pipes fall down under power - not pretty).

I've looked at the more popular suppliers but don't see any cat-back (or with cat) single pipe exhausts in stainless. My car is the Lime Green color and the rear valance has only the one cutout for the single pipe exhaust. I don't really want to pay to have a new dual exhaust valance matched & painted, I just want a single stainless exhaust and maybe a nice stainless tip.

Anyone replaced their stock single pipe exhaust with an aftermarket one???

Thank you!

I would strongly recommend converting it to the dual set up. You could get a GT takeoff cat back complete set up for dirt cheap all you would have to buy is the X or H pipe. The 4.0 benefits greatly from a more free-flowing exhaust system especially when coupled with a decent cold air intake. Plus they sound pretty good to. Overall it will probably be about the same price as just redoing the single system and will be a very durable exhaust system with better performance.

It's very easy to cut the opening on the driver side, and looks good too. If you go to Pypesexhaust.com you can download a template. Be sure to print it full size

Interesting idea - The GT exhaust is stainless??

I got the template, thanks for the tip! There's a couple exhausts there that look interesting as well.

best way to improve the exhaust note in a V6 is to swap in a V8 :)

I had initially cut the left opening when I put on the dual exhaust. Just stay away from Pypes, that is total crap. Fit is poor, and the parts are shit. Muffler hanger broke after just 2 years.

I know this is probably discussed in numerous threads, but do you have a specific manufacturer/model that you would recommend??? (Besides a GT cutout).

You've probably saved/prevented me from purchasing a Pypes exhaust...

Yes,Ford racing had a dual conversion for the same price as pypes. I should have gotten that at the time.

No need. You can save yourself a ton by purchasing an H or X pipe and use these intermediate mid-pipes (stainless; around $50 - 70 ea) look up 55517/55518. Can purchase them from summit/other shops or online. Get a used set of stock GT mufflers and you're off to the races.

This has got to be the most ultimate attempt at polishing a turd of the highest order.

I live in an area where Winter is eight months long and a snowfall means 6 - 8 inches of...salt...

Stainless exhaust isn't a cure-all for rust, but every little bit helps...

I had the pipes mid muffler duel conversion kit. I thought it was a very good quality and really liked the sound with no drone. Was approximately 600 bucks complete. The Roush mid resonator/muffler kit sounds great to.

Not sure what it is made of but generally stock is normally very high-quality.

The OEM pipes that run over the axle up to the mufflers are stainless steel; even on your v6, the passenger side pipe is one that you would need, regardless. Just get a stock GT driver-side pipe, and do the cutout as noted above, and appropriate mufflers of your choice, and you're most of the way way.
The Y-pipe can be altered either by making it true divorced/separate pipes (my favorite), or put in an h-pipe in place. Either way, couple to the rear 'over axle' pipes, and you're good to go.

What he said. Your best bet is to get a complete used take off stock GT exhaust from the H-pipe backwards. It's 408 stainless steel so at worst it might have some surface rust. The H-pipe may need to be modified to bolt up to the V6 exhaust manifolds, and a divorced dual set up would sound better on a V6 so you can delete the crossover pipe from the H.

I used this X-pipe kit from Magnaflow...it's stainless, and the install is not difficult if you can get under the car. https://www.magnaflow.com/products/16411-performance-exhaust-manifold-pipe

It is designed to use any GT parts after the X. OEM GT or GTB mufflers sound good on these cars. Careful with the aftermarket mufflers...go too loud on the 4.0, and they sound like ass. I made my own template by tracing the passenger side, then flipping it over (mirror image) to use on the driver side. I cut the bumper cover with a pair of tin snips (a little under-sized), then finished with a beer bottle wrapped in 40 grit sand paper.

Wow! I appreciate your post - But that is one screwed-up web site! There is some ad blocking access to the site unless you sign up for their newsletter! It just won't go away. Probably a hacker - It is that time of year. I can see the background image of the X-pipe but there's no way into the site without 'signing up' which I will not do.

Thanks for your help anyway!
