If you look at some of the pics in the thread that Livernois worked on getting locked or any other pics, you can usually see the marks left by the gaskets and see they encroach or...

    New doesn't necessarily = assembled properly. They are FRPP not OEM correct? It's a simple a quick thing to do that could identify the source without the need to pull the motor. If all looks good afterwards then you still got a borescope that comes in handy for tons of projects around the house!

    Because you are assuming the rings did bot seat at this point with out having ruled out other possibilities. You are ready to rip out the motor but not remove the manifold or drop a borescope to examine the backsides of the valves? One seems a lot easier than the other....

    ^^^^^this. Works just fine in my 05. Pinch the arrow shaped end and push it back out of the larger plastic assembly. Then insert into the Fore fuel hat. Edit...this is a newer sending unit. Not the original out of the 05's

    Could also mean the piston has heated up, expanded and no longer rocking in the bore.

    So has the OP narrowed down if the sound is emanating from the valve train or deeper down? My old F-150 sounds like this on start ups but it is definitely more audible through the oil pan....damn piston slap!
