My 2006 4.0 has been giving me problems. At first, sometimes it wouldn't start and an hour later it might start. My mechanic replaced the crank position sensor. Drove it home and same thing car only starts intermittently. My mechanic replaced the Fuel pump and fuel pump control module. Drove it home and drove it a few places and now it won't start. Code says P0190 &07e8 Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance. I replaced the fuel rail pressure sensor twice and now it will start about every other try and die after about 20 seconds. I don't want to take it to a mechanic as I've already spent too much on this unresolved problem and the car has been sitting for most of two years because of this. I've read that 2006 Mustangs have poor dependability and am wondering if these can ever be dependable. Any suggestions?

Your mechanic is throwing parts at the car. Just reading the code and replacing the component that is involved often burns money without positive results. There is more than one program you can use to test systems and components (troubleshoot) to help find the problem. I rely on an SCT X4 to datalog in real time and watch selected systems operate. I have also used AutoIngenuity software and found it useful. You could have a single loose wire causing the intermittent fail to start.

Thanks for the suggestions. That is why I'm not using that mechanic anymore. I'm the one who replaced the FRPS twice. Both those scanners are about $400 each. I probably won't need those after fixing this problem as I'm at the point where I just want to use my older simpler cars before scanners were used. Not sure I want to own this car anymore. It is the newest car I've owned and the least dependable. It doesn't even have 90K on it. I would hate to spend $400 and still have this problem if they aren't a guarantee to solving this. I've already spent about $1400 not fixing this.

If you have a laptop, get Forscan. Dont need to purchase a license for testing, just a Vlinker adapter. https://www.amazon.com/vLinker-USB-Programming-Modification-Hacker-Proof/dp/B0CZ92SLDY

Intermittent no start- have you checked for spark when its not starting? Can you hear the fuel pump prime before you crank it? Have you tried starting fluid when it wont fire? Just because its computerized, you still need the basics: spark, fuel, and air.

If you have the ability, have the fuel pressure tested mechanically without the sensor.

If it matters the starting isn't intermittent since I changed the FRPS. It starts and stops running after about 20 seconds consistently. I'll order the scanner adapter.

Finally tested with the Forscan and it says crankshaft position sensor. It was replaced a year and a half ago and 50 miles. Studying up, I decided to try replacing the crankshaft position sensor since it causes the same symptom when failing even though the code didn't come up, but it looks old. If that doesn't do it, I guess I will have to change the crankshaft position sensor again since the code came up. I don't know what to do after that but bring it to a new mechanic. I think this 19 year old car is too new for me to own. I need simpler

The biggest problem today isn't the age of the vehicle, it's the quality or lack of quality of the new parts. Once you drop down from genuine Motorcraft from a known good source it's all a gamble.
