2008 4.6L 3valve VCT solenoid-remove valve cover?

I know there are varying opinions on the need to remove the valve cover. My question is does the boot shape give any clue? I purchased the replacement VCT solenoid for Bank 2 and noticed it came with 2 different boots, 1 a perfect circle with a centered hole, and the other was larger and has an offset hole. I've been watching video after video and many seem to have the offset boot style and do not remove the valve cover. I on the other hand have the centered hole one on my vehicle (photos attached for reference). Does this "centered" style imply there isn't any space to get a tool in for removal of the bolt, thus requiring removal of the cover? I don't want to get in to deep and find out I need more parts. Many thanks in advance. Also, you'll notice I do not have the "notches" to coincide with the shape of the offset style boot.

The two styles are from different years. I dealt with the same issue, but I had the valve cover off before messing with it. You don't need additional parts to remove the valve cover.

New VCT solenoid boots are a real piece of work to get set in right… (as they should be, I got a set from Fel-Pro that set right in without any resistance, went online and bought “OEM” and they sealed good) I would recommend taking off the valve cover to make sure everything is seated right and you don’t risk damaging the sensor (old, or new).

I don't want to get in to deep and find out I need more parts.
Better now than later, when something that you could have seen and replaced now fails :shrug:

Look up videos of cam swaps on YouTube (Foureyes, LMR) and you’ll find the videos have a good tutorial for valve cover removal. Only thing to be careful of is not getting debris inside the engine, and make sure you seal the timing cover/head point with RTV along with a new gasket.

I would just remove the valve covers to inspect everything, and to ensure you properly install the VCT solenoid. You can do it without removing, but worthwhile pulling the covers IMO.

Thanks everyone. Great advice from all. I appreciate all the replies and happy to have such a valuable network at my disposal. I'm by no means a mechanic but I am mechanically inclined and I love to learn. This was my Dad's Mustang. I lost him back in November and have been working on small things here and there to get her back on the road.
