Anybody know what the top of 4th is with 373s & a 28" tire? Or better yet will I have to shift to 5th in the 1/4 mile with a 100 shot?

Yes, you will have to go to 5th.

+1 Definitely 5th. I've got a 27inch tire and It's maxed out trying to go through traps in 4th N/a with 3.73, even with the 28 being a inch bigger, you'll definitely max it out especially with 100 shot.

This is exactly why I'm staying with my 3.31's. I run a 27" tire as well, and with a 7400 rpm shift point, I can run 4th out to about 130, which is perfect for a 150 shot.

this is why I didnt get 3.73's, seems 3.55's may be a better choice but doesnt seem worth the hassle going from 31's to 55's

I'm in the same boat. I just got quoted 1100 bucks to swap out the 3.73's to a 3.55.

I keep going back and forth on what to do. A smaller OD tire would let you use more of 5th but it's still not right. All the math says 3.55

Any one find a solution. Seems some have just stuck with the 28 and got a tune to up the rpm. They have turned good times but I'm a little scared to do a tune right now.

What did you guys end up doing? I know this tread is a little old so maybe you guys have tried some thing and got some results?

$1100 is very high to regear an 8.8. Frpp gears are $150ish. Reasonable labor is around $300.

$1100 is way too much, I paid $150 for the gears and about $400 for the install. Expect between $300 and $800 for a reasonable price range. Cheaper isn't always better either.

Depends on what you trap. Shifting at 7500 rpm, no. You're good for about 124 mph in 4th.

I ran the same combo before.

I assume that quote was from the dealership? If not, run from the guy charging that amount!

No shit! You can buy a whole new rear axle for $1100. This way you know the gears are set up correctly, since it came straight from Ford.

Ya, it was from the dealer. I have not found a decent shop around here yet and I'm not sure if I should try and tackle this myself having zero exp with changing gears.

A new third member might be the best way for you then. Factory set gears and you can then sell your 3.73 rear to recoup some dough. I bet it'd sell quick too. I'd buy it to replace my 3.31 third member if you were close. It's a lot easier to replace the whole thing versus the gear swap.
