I still have a hard time believing the STOCK 6.0s were troubled Engines. I have 2, I bought both NEW. Both until very recently were totally stock! The 05 has 155,xxx miles on it and has never been in a shop for any repairs. My 06 has had a few minor issues and recently last week @ 135,xxx miles we put an EGR Delete because of coolant disappearing!. I don’t maintain them any different then I do my 01 7.3 either!
I do know ALL the 6.0s of my friends that were “Tuned” without exception had problems.
Let me give you the run down of our 6.0's (yes, we have more than 1).
We have an 03 with the 6.0 option, my personal 04 FX4, an 06 FX4, two F-450s with dump beds, an 05 F350 dually FX4, and 2 other 04 F-250s 4x2s.
The 03 has blown the left side injectors 3x's and the right side twice.
My 04 personal has blown all injectors twice, an EGR cooler and a head gasket BEFORE my tune. Yes, I chipped my truck.
Both our dump trucks have blown injectors at least once, and head gaskets twice on one and three times on the other. One blew the turbo.
My 06 has blown the turbo, the injectors once, and one head gasket.
The 4x2's have only had one head gasket, one EGR and 4 injectors (just four, not all 8 four times).
The only truck to have a tune is my 04. The only truck ever to go a mile over 3,000 without an oil change was one of the 4x2's when it was on a service route in North Carolina for 6 months. The only trucks that didn't run synthetic oil were the F-450s.
These trucks are maintained meticulously. Their oil changed normal, their filters all changed normal, and Diesel Kleen was run through them once every 6 months.
Straight pampered trucks for fleet vehicles. You want to talk about Fords biggest F*** up of all time? It was neglecting the 6.0 owners when International F***ed Ford with a shitty injector and head design.
No, the 6.0 injector problem was in no way shape or form limited to tuned vehicles. The head gaskets were more prominent in overboosted, tuned trucks but again, no way shape or form was it limited to tuned vehicles. The 6.0 is one of the worst motors EVER put on production by Ford.
I would buy a 7.3 with 200,000 miles before I bought another 6.0 with 50,000. And no, the only problem I had with my 6.0s was injectors once on my 04 before we bougtht the remaining of our fleet vehicles.
(These numbers are off the top of my head. There is more to the problems including turbo couplers blown off, transmission range sensor, transmission failure, rear main seals, and a few other things).
