4-Shifter Bolts Spec

Can anyone tell me what the tightness spec for the 4 bolts that go throw the base of the shifter are? Everyone says not to over tighten them and looking at the shop manual I cannot tell what they exactly call this to determine which spec it is.

about 4:40 they don't say to torque them to any specific setting but they do say they strip easy

im sure if you snug it, youre not going to have to worry about torque specs. youre taking this a bit too seriously

You may not need help with this anymore since it is a few days old but I did a little testing today with my trusty inch-pound torque wrench and a small (1/2" hex head) bolt and nut. Result: 25 to 30 inch-pounds is about "wrist tight" for me (1/4" ratchet). I would not tighten the shifter plate bolts any more than 30 inch-pounds and, IMHO, 25 inch-pounds should be plenty. Use a criss-cross pattern (like tightening lug nuts) so that the plate is drawn down evenly.

You could also try doing a search on the net for bolt torque specs. You will probably find a chart that shows a torque spec for bolts assorted by size and type but not specific to the application.

Once you identify the size of the nt and of the bolt, it's not a long reach to the Old Mechanic's bit of wisdom: it's not arbitrary nor a coincidence that combination wrenches are the length they are. The amount of torque a regular-size, regular-strength person can apply with a given-size wrench is likely to be pretty close to the specifications for the nut/bolt as found in your chart.

I would say no more than 10ft pounds if youre threading into steel. If into aluminum probably 5 would be sufficient. Use some copper or synthetic based never seize aswell. This will hopefully help from stripping the threads.

For reference. When I bolted the MGW on my t56 in my old car. I set the torque wrench to 10ft pounds. That was into aluminum and I used copper never seize.

30 inch pounds is roughly 2 and 1/2 ft pounds. My opinion thats not tight enough.
