5.4L Oil Change

anyone have any experience doing it? Swapped mine on the Shelby yesterday and what a PITA the filter placement is. I had maybe 3 inches of clearance up/down and side to side. It was very difficult getting the filter off and back in place. The motor is lowered by about 1 1/2"s so maybe that made it harder.

Damn filter spilled oil all over when I got it off. Header, oil pan and A-arms, damn PITA!

Yeah I bet it sucks man. Haven't done it on an s197 4 valve but it still sucks on the new edge 4v

The 3v is sort of annoying too with the angle. I drain the oil, including removing the refill cap to try and get as much oil/pressure out. Then loosen the filter and put a large ziploc bag around it to catch the oil. Yes it is really annoying trying to spin an oil soaked filter in a plastic bag.

I've got a 3V 5.4 and it's a bitch with the angle and position of the sway bar; I usually do the plastic bag trick afore mentioned

Yup!! The engine mount and filter mount are labeled in/out and not thinking i went in to in out to out. It was evident as soon as i started the car, so shut it down got it fixed and all is well.

I think the filter locations on all 5.4l powered fords is a pain. Both of my f150's i have had have royally sucked doing an oil change on.

pretty much! lol... there always in a bad place... off subject but that and that one damn starter bolt you can never get to! lol...

On the Civic SI I had before my new Stang, you HAD to take the front right tire off to even get at the filter. Once the tire was off, you had to reach through a smallish opening, go around the axle and steering components and then reach up to the filter. You could only move a ratchet three clicks at a time with the filter wrench on it. But as soon as it was starting to come loose, I'd slap a 1-gallon ziplock bag over it and pull it out that way. Never got oil all over the place again after not using a bag the first time.

But yeah, a relocation kit would seem to be the best solution.

do the fittings from the unit extend past where the OEM filter location is?

You did it the super hard way lol you don't HAVE to take the tire off, if you lay under it you can reach up and over to it, its tight and a pita but easier than taking the tire off.

i had a SI as well, K&N filter had a 1" nut on the back of it... that and a swival worked like a dream!

No, even with the glowshift sandwhich adaptor i used on the engine side between the relocation mount which is 1.5" thick, they still dont extend fartehr than the stock oil fiter. With just the relocation fitting on the engine they dont extend past half the length of the oem filter.

Havent done a 5.4 yet, my 3V is cake, but I also have removed everything in the way.
