8.8" posi shims

Have a bit of a clunk in my rearend.
.011-.012" backlash on ring gear, however the spider gears in the posi are .020"+. How do you shim these? Are they shimmed on the clutch pack gears, or on the lock pin gears?

A set of clutches should fix this - I believe it's zero clearance and then the s spring pushes the stacks outwards for initial bite.

Probably not a huge deal to have backlash in those gears. These drivelines are clunky by nature. Need to learn to drive around it, mostly. You can spend $1100 on a drive shaft or something, and think, "Yeah, that's better!!" but in my experience it's just mental salve on the injury to your wallet. Hehe.

They can be shimmed tighter to help eliminate some of the "slop"

Yeah, be careful doing that/swapping steel and friction orders around. There's a reason the factory arrangement is the way it is, something about spline engagement on the clutch plates. Probably can just have a bunch of steels and frictions around and select the thickest of them to install on both sides.

You can take the fiber off one side of a clutch disc and add it to the existing pack and it will increase the holding power and take up the slack.
Trans builders do the same thing to beef up auto trans clutch packs sometimes

+1. The backlash is set good.
I did a clutch-pack rebuild last year on my '05, using the new carbon fiber rebuild kit.
It can be a bit of a challenge in getting the clutch packs in and lined up properly, but with persistence and patience, you can do it.
You don't have to pull out the carrier, although you might find it easier to work with on a bench. If you do pull it, just put the carrier shims back in exactly like they were.
