A couple of questions...

Without pictures to know for sure, I would be concerned about affecting the input shaft angle and the load on the input shaft bearing over the long term.

I agree I was slightly concerned about this as well,but once I got to try it, it takes very little effort to move the plate just a tiny amount so it doesn't contact any more. I used a spacer around .030 so I wasn't too concerned about throwing anything off. I also agree the best fix is to go to the updated plate route. I would suggest the OP climb under the car with a light, look through the inspection slot to see if it is even the separator plate causing the issue as it's easy enough to tell before trying to fix something that might not even be the cause.

Lol, I really dont think telnet is used much anymore but it was my first practical application into networking

I took no pictures. No special tools required. A couple sockets, two small spacers and a pair of pliers should be all that's needed
