When your car is running, your battery is supposed to put out 14.4 volts. I have no clue how many volts the alternator is supposed to put out, but I'd assume 14.4 volts as well.

Obviously the battery is supposed to produce 12 volts when the car isn't running.

The alternator is what makes the battery read 13.5-14.5 volts when running. Your battery doesn't "put out" anything with the car running. The alternator is just maintaining the battery's state of charge. You are literally powering the cars electrical demand with alternator output.

There, I fixed it.

Just quick update. After installing new alternator and still having issues a friend of mine said to check the water level in the battery. Checked it and it took about 6 oz of water! Been driving the car all morning and seems to be running fine. Dumb rookie mistake on my part for not checking it and it cost me $300 bucks!

Just a suggestion to check water level when having battery/alternator/power issues...

Ouch! Always helps to check the battery first. It's all a learning process and you'll know for next time.

One thing that you should always do if you are having electrical or charging system problems is to take your car to autozone or another parts store that has a charging system analyzer. A good analyzer will do a variety of tests that will prevent you from buying unneeded parts. It will tell you with a very high degree of certainty exactly what the problem is. There is more to troubleshooting a modern charging system than using a volt meter.
