billet oil pump without lockouts?

from the threads and pm's I've read it seems that the melling pumps need vct lockouts. Is there an option for going with billet geared pump that would not require the lockouts or are the lock outs a must? I'd rather not lose the whp, but if there's no choice then I wil. safety first...
