I am new to this particular forumn I was led here by Armycook and i have a question for the Hellion turbo kit owners. Have any of you guys run into any trouble with your turbos because I have gone through 2 of the damn things within the last 2 months.

My car:

Built short block from SHM
Stock Heads and cams
60#injectors
Dual Ford GT fuel pumps
Mafia
Manual Boost controller
Tuned to run between 9 and 17psi
Makes anywhere between 490 and 650 rwhp (cant run it for too long at increased PSI still waiting on 1 piece drive shaft and DR's)

Welcome to the forum!

I don't have hellion experiance and not knowing what problems you are having make it hard to offer advice, but I will share this with you...

I used to race RX7's, all setup with Grand National twins pushing 21 PSI each. The fisrt car I was trying to setup was a Keystone Cops foot chase. They kept overheating and blowing bearings. One time, a unit poped so hard it blew the waste-gate right off the pipe... @ $800 a piece (at the time) I was getting pissed.

After talking to some people and running some tests, I found that the oil pressure was too low and my oil coolers were too close to the coolant radiator. I added 1 inch stand-offs to the coolers with secondary aux fans and put in a dedicated high-pressure oil system.

The rest of 2 seasons runing 7 cars, no issues...

With the oil pressure these cars run, I highly doubt that is the problem. Most '05+ turbo kits run very small feed lines and or oil restrictors to keep the turbo from getting too much oil and blowing past the seals.

I was wondering what the oil pressure is supposed to be. do you have a ball park?

After I lost pressure at MIR last week, I am really concerned and thinking I should buy a good gauge with numerical values I can read instead of depending on the very vague stock gauge.

Ford spec is 30-60psi @ 2k rpms at operating temp.

Well the first turbo lost three fins on the compressor side sending them into the intercooler. Come to find out the bearings were thrashed and there was too much shaft play. The second turbo lasted about a week when the car started smoking really bad and losing alot of oil. Come to find out the oil seal on the turbine side gave out and was dumping oil straight into the exhaust side. I am now on turbo # 3 and all seems to be going well so far I was just wondering if any other owners had complaints.

BTW the kit comes with a 62mm Turbonetics turbo.

Sounds like you have just had some bad luck, that isn't the norm for Turbonetics turbos.

I think the Turbonetics is a BB turbo and if you don’t have a restrictor in the oil line you could be blowing the seals out and causing the failures. These 3V’s run very high oil pressure and you have to have some type of restriction in the oil lines with a BB turbo. My Garret turbo recommends restricting the oil lines with a 5 to 10 thousands opening.

No Problems with mine , I have about 6k miles on it no issues . The Hellion Kits come with thrust bearing Turbos, The Ball Bearing is an option.
Oh yeah almost forgot mine is a 76mmbb race pipe kit , 550 rwhp Stock Block no problems. Love my Hellion!
