Can I temporarily unplug the restraint control module?

Under the stereo is the airbag control module. I'm in the process of removing all electrical tape from my wires. I am also rewrapping in non adhesive tape and loom where needed. I'm about to do the run from the stereo to the fuse box.

I just don't want an airbag to blow up in my face. Is it safe to unplug it? Should I remove the fuse first? Disconnect the negative cable?

Thanks

I can tell you here that when we replace them at the dealership there is programming involved. Based on that, I would say be careful. Don't think it will cause a bag to go boom. Might not work properly once plugged back in.

check the owners manual to find the air bag fuses, there should be more than 1.
remove the air bag fuses and wait 10 min. the air bag system will be powered down.
with the system powered down you can now safely work on the air bag system.

just unplugging and later plugging back in the connectors doesn't require programing.
now if you turn the key on with the system powered down or one connection unplugged. this will turn on the air bag light on in the dash.

I would just unplug the battery and not sweat it. Don't put a screwdriver on top of the airbag and then start hanging around.
