I over tightened my crush sleeve and locked up my rear. I have everything out right now but I cant get the pinion back out. I have tried leaving the nut on the end and hitting it but all I did was mess up the threads on the nut. I tried using a dead blow hammer but that didnt work either. last thing i want to do is mess up the threads on the pinion. any other ideas guys?

Bigger fucking hammer!!!! Seriously. You got the preload wrong and the bearings got VERY hot. Pinion is stuck to the bearing and has to slide thru it. No other way around it. Customer brought one in where he lifted the car at the rear and peeled the did cover, leaked all the fluid out. Took two of us almost an hour pounding on the pinion w a 3lb hammer in rotations to get it out. If you have a torch, you can try to heat just the bearing itself maybe. See if a bit of expansion can help you out.

push come to shove I will just have to buy a new ring and pinion to get another pinion. im going to have to beat the hell out of it to get it out. thats how i got the old one out. we have a torch in the shop so I could try that but wouldnt that make the threads weak when I put another nut on it? or should I heat up the front of the pinion.

Try heating the bearing right where it meets the pinion. Have to do it quickly because the pinion will start to absorb heat and expand, too. So it's a small window. I'd count on a new ring and pinion as is. There is some metal fusion going on that's keep the bearing and pinion locked right now. It could have already gotten hot enough to fatigue it right there at the bearing, who knows.

well got to work early still couldnt get the pinion out. gonna put a torch to it and heat it up while someone is hitting it later. i went ahead and took the seal out and I could see that the bearing had just exploded so I think I got very lucky. could have been worse. so I just need to replace the races and bearings again.

gonna use a big sledge hammer to just for kicks. I can fit a 19mm deepsocket over the end of the pinion so im not messing up the threads.

I got it out finally. the bearing had welded itself to the pinion after it exploded I guess. Gonna have to order a new ring and pinion. just to be on the safe side. dont want anymore problems. one of our audi techs next door to us use to work at the mustang shop I went to a while ago so he gonna let me put everything back together and he will set my preload and check the backlash to make sure I dont mess anything up again.
