Car won't start

I went out to run some errands last night when I stopped for gas and turned off my car. I filled my car with gas and went to start it but got nothing. I immediately thought oh great my starter just went out. I should mentioned that my car started several times before with any issues.

So I jacked up the car and tapped on the started then tried again but had the same results. The guy at the gas station and another guy helped me push start it with any problems. I had a meeting at my daughters school so I had to have a buddy of my and my wife push start it after the meeting and got the car home.

This morning I removed the started and went had had it tested. The test came back with it passing. Although it was making grinding noise so I went ahead and replaced it. I installed the new started but I still have the same results it just does not want to start.

It's getting power but I dont know what the heck is going on. I know I could push start it and it would run fine. At this point I'm lost and have no clue.

I don't think its the gas kill switch in the driver side kick panel. I could hear the pumps turn on and yes I checked he search button but no luck.

Next step is the starter relay!

Is there a nuetral safety switch in these cars?

Yes I do have the clutch pedal all the way to the floor.

The battery is fully charged.

When you say its getting power at the starter, how many volts exactly is it getting? Is the solenoid even clicking? It is attempting to turn over at all? Check for power at the S terminal on the starter solenoid while the key is in the "start" position.

The Clutch Pedal Position Switch is right by the clutch pedal on the cabin side of the firewall. C257 in the picture:

The starter relay control side is grounded by the PCM which also receives the signal from the Clutch Pedal Position Switch. So if your starter relay is working, its safe to say the Clutch Pedal Position Switch is operating properly.

If the car runs fine when you push start it, it isnt fuel related.

Also, NEVER TAP ON YOUR STARTER. You have a permanent magnet starter motor on your car. Tapping on it will do nothing except for possibly break one of the magnets, which will create a new set of poles that werent designed to be there.

Just to clarify I'm am not getting any type of clicking sound from the starterat all and its new!. It is not even trying to turning overl. It seems to me that something is interputing the signal to the starter.

I thought the probem might be with the clutch pedal position sensor but those guys at AutoZone said my car didnt have one. I didn't even bother telling the guy at AutoZone he was wrong. I'll have to find my multi-meter and to find out how many volts the starter is getting then check back in.

Battery test at 12.06 volts. Same at the starter. Do I need to have the key in the start postion to check the volts at the S position on the Solenoid?

Yes. S is what voltage is getting to the starter when you try and crank it. I had the same issue on my 07 but it was the starter going bad. The only other thing that comes to mind is if there is an issue with your pats system

The guy at Auto Zone is wrong , you do have a clutch pedal position sensor ,and a cruise control sensor both on the clutch rod. If either is stuck or shorted the car will not start, meaning the starter will not engage .You can check it with a volt meter to make sure it has voltage on one side with peddle up and then push the peddle down and make sure the voltage then passes through to the other side when the key is turned to the start position .If you have the pass through on the clutch pedal position sensor ,then check to see if you have the voltage at the S terminal also

Yes. S is what voltage is getting to the starter when you try and crank it. I had the same issue on my 07 but it was the starter going bad. The only other thing that comes to mind is if there is an issue with your pats system

What do you mean by pats system?

BTW, I removed the clutch pedal ignition lock switch and test it with the multimeter. I pushed the pin in and got a reading of zero. I was just checking for continuity but I dont know if I did this right.

Try another key, and that will help to determine if it is the PATS.

I just had similar issues. My toothed gear on flywheel became unpressed and just kept spinning when starter engaged. Had to replace flywheel. If starter is out again soon check play in flywheel. Making this suggestion because of the grinding sound you heard, mine would do same thing. Sometimes it would start 2nd try and then finally wouldn't start at all. Would always start with a pop and 0 drivability issues. good luck
