Changed the tranny fluid finally.

Got around to putting in some Royal Purple this weekend. Not quite the dramatic difference I was hoping for, but noticeably better. Everything seems to be a little smoother and a little less noisy. Had a couple questions though.

I put the car on ramps and drained the old fluid (which wasn't burned but not red either). I got about 3 quarts of the new stuff in before it started to overflow. I know it calls for 3.25 quarts. Will I be good or should I add the extra .25? I should have put all four corners on jackstands to make it level.

Secondly, when I was under the car I noticed a little 1"x1" window in the tranny where you can peek into what Im guessing is where the clutch is. I was looking in and saw what I think is the pressure plate, but it was orange. I'm taking a guess at thats not the stock unit. Anyone have an idea what aftermarket unit might be in there or am I way off base?

The reason you could not get the extra .25 in there could be the fact you had it on ramps. The old stuff did not drain out properly and the new stuff mixed with old.

As far as the aftermarket clutch question it could have an aftermarket clutch. I have seen Ram clutches come with an orange/red pressure plate, and i think mcleod does to. Atleast for my sn95 mustang it was orange/red... Can't remember.

Make the car level when drain and fill it.

Did you use a pump to get the new fluid in?

Centerforce clutches are also orange.

fill it to within 1/2" below the fill port. I bent a zip tie at a 45 degree angle to check. I ended up with a little less than 3 quarts. Check it when the car is level.

DK, I ran a clear rubber hose down beside the shifter into the fill hole and filled it that way. Seemed to work pretty well.

I will put the car on stands and check it again. Thanks for the zip tie idea. Seems like on stands is the only way to go with these cars. Not a lot of room underneath on ramps.

So the manual trans fluid change is as much fun as the auto trans fluid change. On your back on concrete pumping slippery fluid into a hole with no clear vision at all. Good times! Is it full yet?

I spent $8 at Harbor Freight for a cheapo fluid pump. Dumped 3 quarts into a gallon jug and pumped it in from underneath. Once I got 2.5 qts in I started checking it with the zip tie. Got about 2.8 qts in IIRC.
