before i get done with my new build and while the car is still up in the air,i would like to change out my tranny fluid. ever since i installed my hurst shifter i have had a horrible 3rd gear grind, i added the motor mounts and it didnt help at all. whats the best fluid we can put in these damn things? how many quarts do they take and how do you add fluid to them?

I won't tell you what is "best" since that is personal preferance. I used RP Synchromax......and if I remember right you will need 2 quarts (u will actually use less) but don't quote me on that volume. It is actually quite easy to change. There is a drain plug on the bottom.....open it, drain, then re-install the plug. There is another plug near the top for filling. A buddy of mine, whose lift I was borrowing also had a pretty neat tool. It was basically an overgrown syringe with a hose instead of a needle. You stick the hose down into the new fluid bottle and pull back on the plunger, filling up the syringe. Put the hose into the fill port on the tranny and push the plunger to force the fluid into the tranny........really easy. If you don't have one of these devices then I am not sure how you would get the lube back into the tranny without making a huge mess. Others on here might have other methods that will work just as well.

The online service manual shows the location of each of the plugs.

Royal Purple is definitely some good stuff. However your tranny came stock with Ford ATF. Most ATF's have seal "conditioners" that are made using ester chains (yes i know just about all oils these days use a certain ester/pao ratio depending on intended use). While ester reduces friction ,helps maintain a steady viscosity throughout temperature ranges, and increases shear rates; it does swell seals. On transmissions with higher wear/mileage I would be weary about switching to a non atf fluid due to these additives being used differently and causing a problem with seals. Much in the same way people have problems with engine oil. That being said I've read many of people switching to synchromax and not having any problems.
