clunk Question

well i had a clunk and i know that it is not my shocks going bad. the ball joints look ok no tears or any thing in the boot and same with the A-arm.

things i think it could be, MM C/C plates but i know it is not the stud plates they are new, or my front sway bar endlinks.

how should i go about figuring out the clunk i dont know how to tell if my CC plates are worn out or the end links.

one last tid bit....the clunk is worst when ever going over a bump at an angle where the car rocks sideways for a second

are you saying that you think your ball joints are ok because you looked at the dust boot and it looks ok?

check your ball joints.

I had a similar clunck developing, turns out the uper bolts on the sway bar endlink were getting loose, tigtened them up and all is quite again.

I would get that clunck over bumps and angles, the end link moves up and down side to side, it sounds like that your issue.

are you saying that you think your ball joints are ok because you looked at the dust boot and it looks ok?

check your ball joints.

i have had this problem before and it did not help to tighten the end links but i will try it again

Tighten at the uper and lower bolts of your end link. That is usually what it is. They tend to loosen under hard loads. Use some thread lock it helps a little.

i've had the nut on the upper strut mount (where the shock rod meets the upper strut mount) loosen on me twice in the last 2 years, both times making a popping noise similar to what you're describing. I tried using locktite, but even that didn't work.

have you checked those?

I've been meaning to post in the "which camber plate thread".... You have race plates, with spherical bearings in them... those can and do make noise. Which is why on street oriented cars, I generally run the Steeda HD mount/plates because they are camber plates that use urethane bushings for less impact harshness and noise. MM plates are awesome--for a track car or if you don't care about noise.

I have Steeda HD's on my own car in fact.

Jack up the car and set it down on a pair of jack stands. Unlock the
steering wheel. Grab the tire at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. Try to
rock it back and forth. If you feel movement it could be either the ball
joints or wheel bearing.

Tighten at the uper and lower bolts of your end link. That is usually what it is. They tend to loosen under hard loads. Use some thread lock it helps a little.

i havent tried thread lock yet






so can the CC plats ware out and start popping

Me too.....I was trying everything to find it in the wheel well, then I just touched the strut nut and it was finger tight. The tokico-supplied nut doesn't like to stay tight.

I know they have the bearings and that they can make noise but the noise is comeing from only one side and it was the same side that it happend on when I had the tokicos.

To check the ball joints jack up the front of the car and secure it on jack stands. Then take a crow bar and have a buddy put it under the tire, pointy end on the pavement and have him lift up on the end of it. You crawl under and watch the ball joint, and any excess movement at the joint is bad, it should move with the lifting of the tire. You can also watch the sway bar end links, same deal, any excess movement or lack thereof while the wheel is being lifted is bad. This is how I found my endlinks were loose. You could also lift and drop the tire quickly using the same method, simulating hitting a bump, to see if there are any clanking sounds.

turned out that my clunk was my front sway bar end links. i called MM and i talked to them and they explained how to check if it was the C/C plates so i figured out it was not them
