i recently purchased a 2014 gt track pack, 1 owner with 12,500 miles. I've been out of the mustang world for awhile now. I'm experiencing the clutch lock out at high rpms and i cant stand the stock shifter either (i promise i know how to drive haha) just curious as to what a good clutch set up and fly wheel would be. i understand its a 23 spline, im not pickey on brands, i had a ram clutch in my 03 gt and i liked it. i would like a stage 2 clutch with flywheel (i prefer stiffer clutches) i do plan on modding the car since its completely stock. i want to address the drive line first. i will also be replacing the shifter, driveshaft, clutch fluid line, separate fluid reservoir, pilot bearing, rear main seal. any input would be appreciated and experiences you've had.

thanks

Sounds a great find!! I have a 2012 GT that I have owned since new. The high RPM lockout is quite an eye opener, but I never experienced it on the street. Once I started taking the car to the track, I was amazed at how bad it was at 7000 RPM or so. I haven't replaced the stock clutch, but I would like to, and I would approach it as you have suggested, replacing the fly wheel and rear main seal while you have things apart. As far as the shifter goes, I started out treating the symptoms: Barton 2 post bracket, then the Barton short-throw shifter, then the Steeda transmission mount insert. While those things greatly reduced the lockout issue, there was some NVH that came along with those solutions, mostly above 2000 RPM. I finally bought the MGW Race-Spec (standard) shifter and consequently kicked myself for not doing that first. By the time you add up all the other shifter mitigations, you would spend around $500 anyway, so just go straight to the MGW shifter. Of course, the stock clutch is still lacking, but you might feel that the shifter provides enough relief that you don't need to replace a low mileage clutch right away. Although I track my 2012 GT, it's not really that modified. As far as clutches go, I have seen good reviews from people who went with Exedy products.

Recommend adding to the slave shim. You can safely add the thinnest one.

Hi, first post (Woot). I've got a 13 gt that I was having the high rpm lockouts on. I had some luck with the American Muscle - Bartons short throw shifter w/ the two post support. Haven't really encountered the lockout since. I opted to put a VMP kit onto the car and need to upgrade the clutch. The LP Street Warrior clutch / flywheel has been awesome for me.

I am a big fan of the McLeod RXT twin disc. The RST would be good also. Use the McLeod steel flywheel and slave cylinder and measure the throwout bearing preload before putting everything together. Add a shim to the slave cylinder to get near 1 inch of interference (pre load) at the throwout bearing. Change the hydraulic tubing if you want too. McLeod makes one of those also. Stainless beaded nylon I think. The result is a positive, consistent clutch that should last for years.
