Clutch Replacement - Mach 500

replacing my spec 3 with a mach 500. heres some pics of the process so far. sent my spec aluminum flywheel out for resurfacing. Trans goes back in tomorrow/monday. Was a bitch to remove because the bellhousing hits the tunnel...

Turning a wrench is not limited to older mechanics seeing as how you just make sure the bolts you backed out go back in the same place they came from...not very technical. None the less, it is a great personal achievement! There is nothing like completing a mechanical task that others would pay someone $400 or more to do for them. I love the satisfaction I get knowing I tore my car apart and successfully put it back together. Congrats OP!

I'm 23, only a year younger than you and I've had 2 cars both completely torn down, EVERYTHING OUT AND APART, and successfully put them back together with new parts or cleaned up parts here and there. Ah the joys of 15+ year old cars. I've rebuilt a couple of engines, put together a Turbo setup and tuned a car myself. Age is a number my friend, you just need to have faith in yourself and the patience to make sure you put it all back together the way you took it apart. although I will say it looks like a pain to do a clutch on these cars. In my past experience with Nissans I always pulled the motor and tranny together then it's easy to swap the clutch.

yeah that's my parents garage, my dad just bought the Maxjax about 2 months ago. This is the first big task I've used them for. They really are a god send. make life so damn easy!

Clutch will be back in tomorrow or tuesday!

I replaced the spec because i destroyed it. I abuse the living daylights out of my drivetrain. And i'm not a fan of the spec. was great for about 2000 miles then just took a shit and chatters so much now. probably slipping too

Thanks man. Ive been my lab all day today unfortunately. I was hoping to get it done this afternoon but I think by tomorrow or wed is a more reasonable ETA haha. I'm excited to tear this Mach up!!
Also, I found that one of the bolts on the driveshaft loop was really loose and the seemed cause of a lot of recent drivetrain noise as well as clutch chatter. Lock-tite: check!!

You'll love that Mach. Had mine for more than 30k now and its been the best kind of mod. The kind that you dont know is there! Just my .02, if you dont already have one, cough up 70 bucks and get JPC's stainless clutch line. Between the Mach and the line you'll love the feel of your clutch...

P.S. I hate you. I had to do mine in the street out front of my buddy's house.

What does the pedal feel like with this setup?

I have the Mach 600, which supposedly has the same pressure plate as the 500, and the clutch is much more firm/stiff than stock. It's not annoying unless you're driving it everyday in traffic, but my leg did start to get tired after a while.

its a stiffer pedal than stock but its firm and positive. Engagement is much more feather friendly than the Spec I had. So far, it feels 10/10.

I'm only at 445 rwhp and 431 trq. I went with the Mach 600 and would do the same thing again. Agreed it's stiffer than stock but you can feather this clutch like stock. It's gotten much more forgiving as it "wears" in. To me, it's a great clutch with good drivability. You made a good choice going with Exedy.

It wasn't THAT bad, I took my time an with the right tools, and plenty beer on hand, I made it through without any major problems. Was a bit tricky getting the trans far enough back so that the input shaft was clear, but the bellhousing kept hitting the tunnel but with enough wiggling it came out. Other than that not bad at all. I took a 4lb hammer and went to town on the tunnel to make some space. Slipped right back in.

Clutch is very driveable. Its a bit heavy, but manageable. It engages super smoothly and I can feel it starting to wear in nicely now.

I got this clutch for $420 from BBR and installation cost zippo (beside renting a tool to remove the pilot bearing) so not bad for a full clutch replacement. Makes driving the shit out of them very affordable haha.

What slave did you use??? The exedy 600 is the only one I found that comes with a new slave...
