Convertible top string

There is a string that attaches to the top frame and part of the top that folds when going down. The string is very loose and stretched looking and when the top is put back up it most of the time will hang out of the top and over the side window. I am assuming this string is meant to make that part of the top fold inwards, but mine folds out (probably because this string is stretched too long). Can I just cut this string off without any negative effects? I would normally just want to replace it with another set but I am worried that if I start making that part of the top fold the way it is supposed to it will get too worn because I have no idea how long it has been that way. You can see the part of the top that folds wrong in this pic:

I really hate how it folds like that with the corners all sticking up. Maybe replacing the string and having it fold right wouldn't really harm the top at all, I'm just not sure. Any input would be great.

Iirc there are multiple points to attach it on the frame arm and you can tighten it up. Mine was doing the same thing after i got a new top and i moved one of the anchor locations to fix it.
