So, as some of you may know, Im pretty new here. I just recently bought my GT about 2 weeks ago. I used to go to the track all the time with my buddy and his '63 pro street Nova, but being that I drove a civic *ducks for cover* I never ran it to save myself the embarrassment. lol. So I have a few quick questions that I am sure some of you guys have a ton of experience with. I apologize if they sound dumb, but i would like to know. haha.

First off, on the stock tires, should I even waste my time in the water box, or just go around it?

When you launch, whats a good RPM to launch at on stock tires?

Should I even waste my time with borrowing some real sticky tires from a buddy?

Right now, the car is boone stock. I want to get some base runs in as well as get used to actually racing at the track and my car so I can see my times improve as I start putting on some parts and gain some skill.

I always went around the water with the stock tires. i never did a good burnout with em either. jsut a quick spin to clear debris then staged

I launched anywhere between 2000-3000 depending on track conditions.

Definately borroew or get some MT's

My experiance is the opposite of Ron on this one.

I never used the water box when I first started. I could not launch at any higher than about 2500, maybe 3000 rpm without spinning. I started using the box to clean the tires after driving through an oil-down and found a big improvement. I will spin in the box, pull forward, heel-toe the brake/gas and dump the clutch. I will not let off the brake until I can't see anything but smoke out the back window, then while the car is still floored, I let the brake out and start to burn toward the line to get some fresh rubber / glue mix goin' on.

On stock tires (after a good burnout) I could start launching at 5000-6000 RMP. As I slip the clutch I go to about half pedal and once It hooks I go wide open. That's on the stock 235/55x17's from Pirelli.

If you want base times, don't use DR's as that "is" a mod.

So basically you just do a real quick slip through the box and then pull forward to do the actual burnout?

I feel like such a n00b like Im trying to learn to drive stick. ahhaha

Yea, I just spin a little in the box. Maybe 2 or 3 revs. That helps the whole tire get wet so it heats more evenly. From there, just pull forward a few feet to a dry spot and let it rip!:clap:

Don't worry about asking questions. We are all here to help each other out and have fun while we are at it...There is a great group of people here and (although they joke a bit) no body is gonna think any less of you because you ask for help.

I used to think that burnouts were ALWAYS a bad idea on street tires.

I was at the track the other day without my DRs. I was on my crappy truck tires and on the second run I actually thought I would try a small burnout just for shits and giggles. The grip actually improved so I did the burnouts for the rest of the night. Compare the first run to the others of the night...

And FYI, back into the water box unless you're running slicks. Driving straight through it with street tires or DR's will make you un-popular in a hurry.

Why would that make me unpopular? Just curious since Im a noob when it comes to actually racing at the strip.

Because when you drive straight through it your front tires will drag water up to the line. Your burnout will not dry off the fronts. This will effect your traction at launch as well as the person or two behind you.

I also did healthy burnouts when I was racing on street tires (Nitto 450s) back in 2005. They always hooked better when hot and sticky.

Before you go, remove unecessary stuff from the car.Jack, Spare and ETC.
If you are looking to realy launch good.Remove the front sway bar.Best first Tip.It will allow the car to rise up and plant rear tires.
TRACK
1 You are going to need a Helmet Snell 95 or newer.
2 When you get to track,Open hood and let her cool down from trip.
3 You will now have to register and bring car to Tech.Inspection.
4 STOCK TIRES=50psi in front.Allows less rolling resistance.25 in rear.
DRAGRADIALs=12-15.I like 13 but this can vary.
5 Enter Staging lanes
6 RELAX.Be comfortable.
7 As you are rolling up to the water box,Go around it.Not thru it.Unless you have skinnies on the front,you will bring water up to the start dripping off the front tires.Back into the water,Drag Radials or slicks only.No water for street tires.Small spin.Pull Forward and wait for operator to instruct your burn out.You dont have to go nuts here.Small burn for street tires basically just to clean.Drag radials or slicks.You must do a decent burn.If you dont, DO IT AGAIN .You Just waited along time in the staging lanes and you dont want to waste your run.I would burn till I see smoke then,maybe 5 seconds longer in Second gear.This will be difficult without line lock.You will have to use first gear if your using the brakes.
Also,If your tires are Brand new.I would drive arround on them for a day.You need to scuff them in.You will not get your best 60ft,s the first time out with them unless they are scuffed in.A heavy Burnout will be nescesary.
8 Pull up and watch the yellow lights.Pull up to the first yellow and stop.Now slowly move forward till second yellow comes on and stop.You are now staged and ready.
9 VERY IMPORTANT! You new Guys get this wrong all the time.Reaction time means nothing if you are just trying to get your best ET.The timer
Does not start till you move and brake the first lazer beam.You could wait for an HOUR and you would still get the corect ET.Reaction time is for racing your oponent or in a class.You do want to try and go right on the green.You will red light if before, but this does not efect your ET.I usually wait to the fourth yellow comes on then I go.
10 Street tires should let you launch between 2000and 2500.
ET Drag Radials will let you between 4500 to 5000.This will vary from car to car and track conditions.
11 If you are realy looking for best times try and go on a day that the track is treated.You will do your best on this day.
12 60 FT Numbers are your most critical Tunning info.Every tenth in the 60ft will yield 2 tenths in the Quarter.Try and get your 60ft,s down.Most are around 2.0 with stock tires.1.5,s is what we are trying to get into or past.
13. Find your max RPM HP table on a Dyno and that is were you want to shift at.Try to get your shifts down smooth.

install linelocks and use the PMP kit and burnouts are as easy as flipping a light switch

The line lock just applies pressure to the front brake lines only correct?

Sorry for the n00b questions, but youre talking to a guy who just made the switch from the Honda world. haha. Its a WHOLE different ballgame now. lol

it "locks" the front calipers after you've engaged them. when u release the button/switch the pressure releases and frees the front wheels
