I just put on a flowmaster 3 inch cat back system on my '12 Gt and now i wanna get rid of the cats. I know the cat delete pipes wont work because of the 3 inch pipes on the cat back system. My question is, whats the best way of removing the cats short of buying $750 headers?

Thanks fishstyx,that sounds like a good idea. Cost effective too. I bought this car 3 months ago and i was looking into every means of improving the exhaust until i save up the money for headers,midpipe and the install fees.

Anyone used American Racing Headers complete system? I met them at Carlisle Ford nationals and their system looks real nice with everything made from 304 stainless. I think its just the headers and catted mid pipe so it will bolt up to my existing cat back.

Has anyone tried to "GUT" their stock converters? I live in MD and we have emissions testing every year after the car is 4years old mine is a 12' so I have some time but they just do a visual with a mirror go make sure "cats" are in place. Then with the car "off" they just plug into the OBDC and check for any codes. So it's better than it use to be where they measured the exhaust with the sniffer test while running it through the gears on a dynometer roller. I have a Lethal o/r h-pipe waiting to go on once my DSS driveshaft arrives.

I gutted my cats. It may pass a visual inspection, but the OBD emissions registers will fail. For a 2008 car you have OBD-II and they aren't pulling DTC codes, they are pulling status of all the emissions registers, one of which verifies the cats are working.

can you clarify that? as far i know there are only O2 sensors back there ... and they *should* be programmable by a tuner right?

For example, you have O2 sensors before and after the cats. Together they determine cat efficiency. Yes, a tuner can disable the rear sensors to avoid a check engine light / DTC, but the associated emissions "Readiness Flags" will never get set and it will fail emissions inspection. The shop will assume that you had a power cut (dead batt) because it can take several drive cycles to reset all the readiness flags. However, if you have emissions items disabled in the tune, the flags will never set, and you will never pass.
