Definitely a cool plane. The company I work for manufacures some key components in the positioning portion of that targeting system. Very advanced and impressive stuff.... at least what little we are allowed to know. LOL.

My aunt was dating a guy who works for Lockheed Martin and I was lucky enough to see footage years ago of them testing the vertical take off with it chained to the test pad. It's still as awesome now as it was then.

Bad plane indeed. I would like to see more of the weapons system since I use to be a weapons loader on the F4C/E/G and F15C/B.

If only you knew what I know. Don't bother asking either. LOL

When I was in the USAF I was a crew chief on F-16s and this thing was rumored to be the replacement like the F-22 "WAS" going to be for the F-15s. However the one in the video I believe is the prototype when Boeing and Lockheed was in competition for the Joint Strike Fighter contract. I heard for the Air Force at least won't be buying up the ones with vertical thrusters and have only the rear vectoring exhaust. The vectoring nozzle is amazing in itself, allowing maneuvers that wasn't technologically possible with F-16. However on paper that sounds cool and does have its advantages........but the F-16 is also capable of providing maneuvers that the human body even with a crisp flight suit can't handle. I think this plane is going to be more about money than anything. I believe Israel and Singapore was the last countries to buy F-16s. An airframe can have so many flight hours on it.....look at the F-15s. Right now, its like Uncle Sam is off to the jet dealership for something with less miles on it.

But right now the contract is on hold due to R&D on the F-35B variant for 2 or 3 years I think. This happened last year about the time.

Funny you said that about f-15 hours. Yesterday 87-0487 just hit 10,000hrs. The first f-15 to do so. I have been a crew chief on 16's, 111's, and now the 15, but that is the baddest mother fucking jet I have ever seen. Pretty crazy to hit that amount of hours on Friday th 13th. The next closest is a c model and I believe it has about 9,600 ish. This F-22/F35 stuff is great to see but I have never seen one deploy to the desert yet. And I still think the 22 is having trouble flying over 10,000' due to cabin press issues.

They won all kinds of technical awards for the F-35 engine and VTOL engine ducting design.

The helmet displays all weapons and radar tracking on the visor. As the pilot looks around and sees a plane out the window, the tracking system will overlay radar and targeting data directly over the plane you are looking at in the real world.

Hell yeah, another crew chief. Yep, I remember them grounding the 15s here in Seymour a few years ago because of airframe fatigue. I'm surprise that stuff got throught phase inspection. I had a friend at Edwards on the F-22s, yeah...he said the computer doesn't like defuelling and a bunch of other stuff. He said the 22 may be short lived at least with the current WH admin. If you worked on 111s you much be a career guy near retirement. Thank you for your service, btw.

I was 16s the whole time. Loved it and miss it. I never seen a 22 go outside US skies except for Maple Flags.

Well WWII era plane were art to my eyes. A P-51, hell even korean war era F-86 is eye candy. Today they are down right basic looking to me. However the planes with steath design are eye candy too....probably why F-35 is so good looking to me.

The base I'm stationed at shares the runway with Lockheed Martin. We get to see the F-35 fly around from time to time. Pretty neat stuff. Being in the Navy I find it interesting that it's a single engine bird. One engine sounds like a great idea when you fly over the water all the time.

Its' too bad that the Chinese have probably already stolen enough of the technology to build their own.

Cool to see we have some crew chiefs on the board. I spent 11 years on f-16s and now I'm on C-17s. I think me and you have spoke before Jinx. You were stationed an Cannon right?
