Bump from the dead. I'm about to this install and was wondering...do I need a special tool to remove the lock ring? I'm swapping in a GT500 pump system.

Any and all tips appreciated!

Use a brass punch if you have one. Remember, the GT500 pumps will go in. It's not a cruel joke. Don't forget to lube the oring. Are you doing a Whipple?

I found turbopete's advice invaulable, unbolting the 2 gas tank straps at the back (just like you would to install an uca) and let the tank sag down on the ds/exhuast alittle, this lines up the hole in the tank and the hole in the car better and makes removing and installing the fuel hat alot easier when you have mulitple pumps on it or a gt500 setup, it is doable without though.

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind!

Yes sir. Can you link me to a brass punch...I sort of have no idea what that is. Is it just a brass punch as in a what you would use to mark something with?

Will these work: http://www.amazon.com/SE-Punch-Set-...1RL2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333416215&sr=8-1

It's not a requirement by any means but I figured maybe he had a gun hobby and had a set of brass drift punches. If that was the case then use them. If not then be careful. A wooden dowel would serve the same purpose.

Another tip is to lay some old towels or rags around the hole and have a few on the side just in case. There will be some fuel spillage.

It's always a good idea to use non-sparking items. You'd figure since I was fuel systems maintenance in the AF, I would know better. I just use a towel, as Bruce mentions, but specifically to cut down the vapor space.

How long ago? Was your tech school at Chanute?

No, my tech school was at Sheppard AFB. There were only about 300 Liquid Fuels Maintenance (LFM) troops (3E4x2) when I went through training in 1995. LFM is part of Civil Engineering. They were still at around 300 when I commissioned in 2005. I went into Comm after that, but still miss the CE days. Well... sometimes. :)

I had it confused with Fuels who were the guys fueling aiplanes. The school was at Chanute AFB Il. (now closed) when I went through Weather Equipment school there in 1984.

I like to file down the tabs on the hat where it first comes into contact with the tank tabs, put equal pressure all the way around the hat & give a little tap to top tab on the hat! Easy peasy!!
