Like the title says. Has anyone toyed around with the idea of twin charging(using turbo and supercharger together)? I have no plans of this but was wondering if its happening with the S197 crowd? Anyone on this forum done this? Maybe one day I will look into this! lol

compound boost and as stated Hellion makes a kit for the GT500s and Terminators

hmm interesting sounds like fun.. how about the 4.6 3v guys instead of the gt500's? or would the hellraiser kit be able to be adapted to the 3v?

Hellion's twin turbo kit for the GT500s can be run with or without stock/aftermarket blower. There really ain't much point in doing it for the 3V. For the money spent, and the hassle of doing it, you could have a nice blower or turbo setup. Hellion gets away with it because the GT500 is factory blown.

The Cobra/Shelby guys have done it. It's hard to tune for, expensive, and there are other cheaper/easier ways of making similar power. It's a cool idea, and can make big numbers, but the powerband is pretty unusable.

For one of us to do it (typical 3v S197), not only do we need a well built motor, but we'd have to buy both power adders. This is a HUGE expense. The Cobra/Shelby guys atleast have the advantage of having one power adder and a build motor from the factory already. For us, for the price, there are a lot of other ways of skinning that cat, so-to-speak.

yeah i hear ya, it definitely is cool and I just watched a video of a gt500 with it and is bad ass. I would love to do something like that one day in the future but i was bored and figure I start a topic on this seeing who has gone this route.

Exactly. I would have put it differently though, something along the lines of "retarded". There's a reason next to nobody tries compound boost.

I feel like twincharging would only really benefit cars with lower displacement where they need a big turbo to make the numbers and as a result, it takes a long time for the turbo to spool. Doesn't seem to be an issue with the 4.6L 3v.

The theory is that you support one power adder's power band with the other. In praxis it does work, but you, as you put it with bottleneck , limit the effectiveness of both power adders; blower has to breathe through the turbo, and turbo has to push through the blower.

You'll see the same concept of compounding boost in planes, diesel vehicles and so on, where multiple staged turbos feed into each other. It can create loads of pressure, but is rarely applicable in automotive applications.

im definitley on the bad idea bandwagon. i mean, on paper it sounds like it addresses some of the shortcomings of each form of FI. But to me its inherentley inefficient and as stated stupid expensive and complicated. Like, whats the real application for it? street - you dont need something so complex to make the power that you would want on the street anyway. drag - one big turbo > compound boost anyway. Why? efficiency.

It doesn't make more power per se, it's about making a usable powerband. The point of it is, the blower feeds boost for the low RPM until the turbo can kick in and take over once it's spooled up. Since blowers are positive displacement forced induction, it doesn't create a bottleneck like you would expect, it does add some heat to the intake charge, unfortunately. But overall, the air would go past the blower like a regular manifold. It's been tried and proven on numerous vehicles, I just feel like it's kind of too much work and money.

It does work and it works very well but on cars with good internals and a stock supercharger. But that has already been said as has been the fact that its way too much money for the result. I have seen a setup which I think is a damn good solution that decouples the blower completely and bypasses it once the turbo comes into boost but it would be hard to do on a Mustang.

But all of that still does not give you much advantage over a correctly sized twin turbo setup which if sized correctly will provide the same power and not much more lag for much less money.

a friend of mine went to sema and saw a crazy compound set up.... a vortech centrif feeding the hot side of a t-80 turbo...... it was on a built 08 gt.... he might come in here with pics and more info.....
