Hey everyone! So my Dad recently turned over the key to the Mustang, and I've started looking at things to do. Ive looked at changing out the Headers and MidPipe and had some questions.

First, some info. It currently has stock headers and midpipe, but has the Magnaflow Cat-back system. Also the car is registered in CA, so i need to follow those emission standards. I also am looking at possibly adding a turbo in the future. so i know i need to get shorty headers for that build, so might as well do that now.

So my questions are:
1. I know the headers need to have a CARB stamp on them to be legal. I found the BBK Ceramic coated shorty headers to be in standard. Are these about the only ones that are legal? What would you recommend? Should I try and go Magnaflow all the way back? Are those headers CARB legal?

2. From what I understand about the MidPipe, in order to be CARB legal it MUST use the stock cats. Thus making even catted X/H - pipes out of standard. Am i correct in this? If so, are there and X/H - pipes that still utilize the stock cats?

3. If i can change out the midpipe, Ive researched that the H-pipe is more for the V8 rumble and X-pipe is more for the racecar raspiness. What do you guys have set up and how do you like it?

Thanks for any and all help! I'll be making a post to show stock, where my dad left off, and where I'm at now! For reference, my dad is javdog, with the black slammed 07 GT/CS.

the car does not have headers stock, it has cast exhaust manifolds.
1) yes you'll need a CARB sticker, check with the manufacture if they have such.

2) most after market H/X pipes eliminate the cats, those that do not, do not use the stock cats

3) sound is all personal preference, you'll have to listen for your self.

If you plan on going turbo, I'd stick with your stock manifolds, they may be re-used in a turbo set-up, or you could end up wanting a kit that includes headers, I'd wait, lots of money gets spent on the right parts the 2nd time around.

Another thing is, I'd never invest in short-tube headers over stock manifolds or aftermarket long-tube headers anyways. I really feel they do next to "nothing" in terms of sound, and more importantly, power.

Did bbk finally get their carb approval or is it still "pending". The only headers that I'm aware of with carb approval are the JBA equal length shorty headers and they were only approved for 2005 Mustangs. The equal length headers will increase torque a little. The other shorty headers are no better than the stock manifolds.

The best way to stay carb legal and make power is with a supercharger or turbo kit that has the carb approval. Not all of them do, a lot of it depends on the tune. FRPP, Whipple, KB, Procharger, and a few others have kits that are approved for all 4.6 3v Mustangs. Paxton and Vortech have kits that are approved for 05 and 06 only. I think the Roush kits are all approved but I'm not 100%. The only CAI and tune that's approved is the FRPP Ford Racing Bullitt CAI and Procal.

I beg to differ.

I went from running 13.0s to 12.7s (best 12.68) from changing to long tubes. So I'd say long tubes do play a big roll in performance. At least it did for me.

He meant he wouldn't pick up shorty headers over stock or longtubes.
Either longtubes or stock

All good man, hahaha. But seriously, short tube headers to me = time out of my life, a few scraped up knuckles, and still losing by two car lengths to the same car before, and after the install.

I gotta start browsing more on the weekends...

Buy a part you plan on replacing... That's like buying a lapdance from a stripper you're dating. No reason to spend that money if you're going to get something better in a couple of minutes.

And  at headers not being an improvement...
