is that normal for e85? I was almost going to guess it had water mixed in before reading.
Looks nasty

It's common to get that as the E85 has a lot of moisture and it evaps off and gets in the catch can.

My catch can looked like a chocolate milkshake, but that was using 94 octane + Ford motocraft 5W-20 semi synthetic. Once I switched to RP 5W-30 HPS, the stuff in the catch can looked like plane oil.... and no where near as much. I have heard the same story from other's..who have switched from ford oil to synthetic.

For you folks who use E85.....and NO catch can, you would end up with one helluva mess....all over the blower elbow, rotor pack, IC, and manifold, yikes.

Looks like the stuff that drains out of my catch can too. I am using ethanol-free 94 pump so it isn't just the corn that does it.

I use chevron 94...also ethanol free...and the stuff in the catch can was the exact same color, except it was liquid..and catch can was 80% full. For whatever reason, once I switched from Ford motocraft 5W-20 semi synthetic to RP 5W-30 (then later to RP 5W-30 HPS).... the stuff in the catch can no longer looks like a choc shake. It now look like plane jane oil.... and catch can is only 25% full.

Dunno if the effect I'm seeing is caused by the use of 100% synthetic oil or RP additives or what. Several other's who have switched to 100% synthetic also noticed the same effect.

Either way, you can see the use of a catch can is mandatory. Otherwise all that glop ends up all over the blower elbow / blower rotor pack / IC / intake manifold. It makes for one helluva mess, and just reduces the octane rating of the fuel a bit.

For you E85 folks, looks like you either need to empty the catch can more often..... or use a bigger one, or two of them.

FWIW you will see more in the catch can if you frequently drive for short distances that don't get the motor up to temp. Getting the motor up to temp helps to dissipate any accumulated moisture. I've always seen more ugly things in the catch can during the colder months and never seen anything but condensed oil vapor in the warmer months.
