Since the new motor early this year, i have occassionally got the random misfire code.

I know the TSB says that anytime a clutch, flywheel, conververter, balancer, etc.. is you should relearn the crank sensor. I was unaware of this until just a little while ago.

There is a Ford dealer next door to Finish Line where I get my work done. He had one of the tech's come by yesterday and we hooked it up to do the relearn.

There are a few boxes and one of them has a 6 in it. On the screen it says it will go to 0. I'm assuming it counts down as you are doing the learns.

You have to take the rpms to between 3400 and 4000 and then let off quickly.

We tried hitting the throttle probably 15 times last night. Sometimes it would come down slow, sometimes faster. Sometimes very slow. But, the 6 never counted down.

The tech had never done the relearn and wasn't even familiar that the new cars had them. I asked at my dealership and no one hear has ever done the procedure either.

Is there anyone that has personally done this that knows what we might be doing wrong?

Our other theory is that some of the "hard codes" could be keeping the car from learning. There is no CEL, but the IDS picks up a couple things like fuel pumps, fuel level, etc.. since none of the stuff is plugged in.

One of the codes though, is MASS Air out of range. This is due to the tune recalibrating the maf. IT's not a code that sets the CEL but a code the IDS sees.

Anyone have any insight to the relearn procedure. Do you need to crack the throttle fast, run it up, what. I know if you get much over the 4000, it will just keep the rpms climbing slowly. You have to kill the key if you get over the 4000.

I asked Jon and he said the codes shouldn't affect it, as evo's car had no problem relearning the crank position sensor and that was with a big procharger and a c4.

Just wondering if we are doing something wrong in the relearn procedure. The IDS seems to walk you through it, but now I have a steady light saying Crank Position Center learn not completed.

The two times I have done it, once with a pro-cal and once with the ford tool you have to hold the RPM over 3500 for a while and then it tells you when it is done. I just followed the directions that the hand held gave me and it worked both times without a problem.

the ford tool said to break the threshold of 3400 and quickly release the throttle.

are you supposed to hold it above the 3400 and then it counts down?? and then you release, i dunno

When I had the relearn done on my car, I had the same thing happen and had to return the car to the stock tune for the relearn to be successful.

Def something that isnt possible with your combination. I dont know of another way around it with a custom tune installed.

did you do the relearn yourself?

I never noticed the countdown when I did mine or when I witnessed the other one.

I was standing right there when the tech was doing it, It was almost the exact same thing. He reved it up and it did a countdown but would never drop the rpms down accordingly. He tried it a few different times but it would hold 3500-4000 rpm for 90+ seconds. I ended up turing the key off to abort the relearn. Once it was tuned back to stock it took maybe 10 seconds for the relearn to complete.

A couple of times, the IDS took over the rpms, a couple of times, they climbed to about 6000 and we shut it off. Another it was holding around 4, but we shut the key.

I talked to Justin @ JPC and they have done a few, but they have had a car that would not relearn either.

I just did a motor swap on my 12 5.0 . Is this what's causing the misfire codes and the instrument cluster weirdness?

it should fire up fine.

it seems like the random misfire is common. i put 4000 miles on the car with 75 or better 1/4 miles passes running as fast as 9.99

An "uncommanded miss" or whatever Ford calls it is a problem. The ECU will only tolerate a little bit before it takes steps to protect the catalytic converter that's getting raw fuel. I had one on one of my cars and it was a defective insulator on the little rod that connected the coil-on-plug to the plug in that car. Occasionally a spark would leak out and I'd feel a miss. More than two or three misses in a row and the ECU went into limp mode. It took months to find it.

I had to do the relearn on my car and I used my Procal tool. It has a relearn function and it worked fine. No fuss, no bother. And that was with a non-Procal tune, by the way.
