I've been wanting to know this forever, but I hadn't asked up until now. When removing/installing stock cylinder heads, you put timing marks on the phasers to keep track of the timing right?

Well obviously when you're installing aftermarket cylinder heads, the valves in them are positioned differently than the stockers, so how do you get the timing right when installing aftermarket heads?

The chains are marked with two black links and there is a dot on the crank gear. The phaser are also marked with a L and R and located with one dowel pin to the cam. long story short line everything per the manual and your done.

Rotate or install the cams in the correct position before bolting the heads on the engine, with the engine at TDC on cylinder #1.

Thanks guys, I honestly believed that there was a lot more to it than that. I have read the manual, but since it pertains to reinstalling stock heads, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything different concerning the installation of aftermarket heads. :)

Aftermarket heads shouldn't change anything unless you changed the cams but even then they will still line up and be timed just like the manual says. I will be finishing mine up tomorrow.

Cool, let me know how it works out. And it makes sense now, it doesn't matter where the valves are when you put the heads on, just how the cam, phaser, timing chain and pistons are positioned.

I'm gathering info because hopefully in the near future I'll be doing my first engine build. Not my dad's car haha, a used 3v longblock when I find one for a good price.

Keep in mind use the R timing mark for the passenger side and L for the driver side.
