I picked up a set of 4.10s, was wondering who y'all are getting the install kits from? Any supporting vendors on here carry something like that?

Install on an 8.8 requires a press to be done right. Everything is set with shims, and you can't just pile them up. The side shims need to be one piece, so if you can't re-use the ones that are in there you need to figure out the size and order them. I've done a couple hundred installs and they can be super easy or a major PITA. I have a bag of both pinion and side shims that I've collected over the years.

Also, the crush sleeve for the pinion gear preload can be a bear. It requires like 275 lb-ft to crush the sleeve to a certain bearing preload, and it's probably 8-10 full turns from contact to finished. If you go too tight you start over with a new sleeve. Getting the picture? I do mine by 'feel' with an impact gun, but I can also 'feel' a .006" backlash without a dial indicator.

This is not the place to experiment unless you can afford to have your car down for a lengthy period of time, have gobs of extra money to pay somebody to fix it, or don't mind gear whine.

dude look into the new solid spacer to replace the crush sleeve. My pinion bearings are starting to whine because they moved. Just 1 good launch will do that to you.

All this fixing I'd done on my rear end will add up to a 9" currie rear end that I should have gotten from the beginning:

1) Had 4.10s put in
2) t-loc went so I put in a tru-trac
3) pinion bearing went so I had it fixed
4) pinion bearing went and needs to be fixed again. It doesn't vibrate or anything but it makes noise between 20 and 40 mph. going to try the solid spacer when I fix it again

Is it harder installing the solid spacer (solid crush sleeve?) vs a regular crush sleeve?

I don't know anything about it other than it exists and that it causes less problems

i just took my gears and a couple of quarts of gear lube to a rear end shop. i didn't have anykind of a kit. they rep[laced the pinion bearing and I guess they had a gasket and reused everything else. no whine or anything ..................yet. i did use the "410-A" gears. the "A" means they are actual Ford parts and "410-M" gears are "Motive" which I have not heard good things about. Hear they whine somewhat prematurely.

I had a guy tell me (don't know how true this is) but he said that there is something about 4.10 gears that all of them whine to some degree, again don't know how true that is.

yeah they do all whine to some degree

If you're just swapping gears, you just need pinion bearings, shims, crush sleeve, nut, oil and black RTV.

I'm doing the gear swap with a friend that is a Ford Tech. He's been real busy so I'm getting all the parts together so we can do it when he has free time.

I just set up a rear with the solid sleeve instead of the crush. It takes a little time to get the right shim set but it is easier than the crush sleeve. The comment about a hard launch messing it up is definately a problem, as is taking off the flange to replace a leaking seal. I was skeptical about it, but it worked out pretty well. Moreso in light of I had to try 3 pinion shims before I got where I wanted to be.
