Im having a custom rear end made from moser w/ 33 spline wavetrac and 1" shortened/side axles. I was wondering if gun drilled/star flanged axles would make them significantly weaker? Im looking to make the parts as light as possible yet able to handle 700rwhp well with the GR40 rear suspension, 3.55s and a 3k launch. It is not a drag car and has an aluminum flywheel so violent launches arent a problem.

Also - how viable is removing 4lbs from the ring gear? Its quite a bit of crucial weight loss, but im not sure how much its going to weaken the gear.

Not sure the gains on the ring and pinion. You'll be find on the star flange. The gun drilled axles make them lighter AND stronger.

I went with 35 spline gun drilled star flange axles, they weigh less than the OE axles, not sure how much, I also had the ring gear lightened. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Now get some drag brakes and you will be set!

Hows the butt dyno checked the results? The axle Ive got on order also has star flanges/gun drilled, but is 33 spline mated to wavetrac.

Very little rotating weight is gone. Butt dyno would be really hard to feel.

I went from an oe axle with 4.30's to a custom moser 8.8 with lightened axles, lightened 4.56 gear, lightweight spool, and drag brakes. I could feel a differance. I would say it was like installing an aluminum driveshaft for me.

This is encouraging info since ill be going to lightened axles, ring gear, a CF driveshaft, and aluminum flywheel. Going from 3.73s to 3.55s though.

That's awesome! I had no clue you could take weight out of the ring gear! any pics of a lightened ring gear? I'm imagining a circular groove machined out?

Make sure you remove the axle weights too. They are good for like 8lbs each.
