got the whole yard cleaned up and made a 2nd trip to the dump to get rid of the rest of the tree plus some more crap from the garage. just in time.... got a call a while ago and just got home from picking up the manufactured stone we picked out for the fireplace that I bought a few weeks back on special order. guess I finishe pulling the tree just in time to start my next project! tonight I'll start pulling off the tile on the fireplace so I can put the stone up over the weekend. hopefully I'll have it done by Monday so I can plant the new tree in the front yard

turns out the hearthstone we ordered for the top of the fireplace step didn't quite match the rock we chose, plus it's really thick. we decided instead of using it for the top we are going to use wood instead that matches the mantel we are going to build. instead of tearing down the old drywall mantel we are thinking of just surrounding it with a nice stained wood. not sure how to explain it but I seen it done on tv one day. I'm just not sure what type of wood they used to cover and stain over the old mantel. is plywood a good wood to use?

cleaned all the thinset off the fireplace and got the top layer of stuff off the mantel. tomorrow I'll pull the 2x4's off and patch up the walls on the sides with drywall. off to dinner now to celebrate valentines day since my fiancé has work and school all day tomorrow.

well I can't stop doing work around the house so I ripped the 2x4's off the mantel piece just now. I'm going to buy the mantel and fixtures at home depot tomorrow and get started staining the wood.

can't decide if we should buy the surround wood pieces that go with the mantel and fill in the area between the fireplace and surround with the stone, or just keep the mantel alone and fill in all the face of the fireplace with stone????

well it's been a long week of driving around trying to find something to lay across the top of the fireplace step. ended up finding a guy who is going to make me a granite slab cut to fit on there for $350. he's supposed to come by tomorrow to make a template and cut and lay the granite on Friday. then I can go ahead and place the manufactured stone on the fireplace.

still haven't found the right tree to plant in the front yard but I plan on hitting up a nursery tomorrow after work.

on a side note- the guy who's coming to fit the granite works for a shop. he does his own work on the side and he gave me a quote on replacing my countertops and island with granite of my choice for $2500 which sounds kind of tempting considering if I go through a store it'll run me $5000 plus. I have some thinking to do.

we got our kitchen tile picked out and ready to buy as soon as my uncle comes down to lay the tile with me

dude stopped by yesterday and got the template made for the fireplace. he's having it cut today and is stopping by around 3pm to put the granite in. then I can finally start putting the stone on and getting this project done.

well after waiting for the granite guy since Friday, he finally decided to show up just now and got the granite on in about 5 minutes. now I can finally move on and start putting up the stone and getting the mantel up along with patching up the drywall. here's a pic of what the granite looks like and I just mocked up some of the manufactured stone pieces to see what it's going to start looking like together

That is going to be tight. I watch people do that on DIY netork and it always turns out so well. Makes me wish I had a fireplace just to try the job.
