That would be my first thing to do. If a customer is complaining about a "Possible" Misfire the vehicle needs to be scanned. The High end scanners allow us to see data that the basic code readers/scanners do not.

Ok. I'll go back and have them scan for me. Would the scanners at advance auto or autozone do the same thing as the high end scanners?

Alrighty I'll check that today. Would I need to drive it around or revving the motor will be sufficient enough?

If you can make that same situation happen by just sitting there do it, but I'd drive it around just to be sure.

That is VCT rattle.

If you have a laptop and know how to data log you will be able to see the cam positions go out of whack when it is making the noise.

Get a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it and see what it is at idle HOT. Needs to be a minimum of 27 psi.

If you have good oil pressure replace the phasor soleniods.

Are you running 5w20 and a Motocraft filter?

5w20 yes but not motor craft filter. I hear those filters up the pressure a tad but which is good I'm assuming

Will vct rattle also change the exhaust tone?

So lets say I get it to make that sound again. If I unplug the solenoid sensor one at a time, should that eliminate that knocking? Thus noting that the solenoids are the issue?

I unplugged the solenoids and CANNOT reenact the issue. I plug them back in and right away it does that shit

That makes it about 99% that it is the solenoids but I would still get a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it and make sure the pressure is good at idle. Low oil pressure will do the same thing with good solenoids.

If it was low oil pressure, wouldn't it still be doing the clanking with the solenoids unplugged?

Some body correct me if I'm wrong.
The oil pressure is what retards the cam timing so with the solenoids unlugged the oil is by-passed to the solenoids and the cams are at zero. The VCT rattle can come from there not being enough oil pressure to retard the cam and the cam basically retarding and returning to zero from the pressure of the valve springs at idle.

I'm curious as what's the outcome of this as well because my car has recently started doing the same but not as noticeable as randys and I have stock cams.

Edit: I forgot to unhook the battery when me and a friend installed the steeda udp.

Replaced both solenoids last night. Runs incredibly smooth. Did not get to drive it around much to get it hot because of all this rain we've been getting.

I will today to see if the solenoids were the issue.
