Powder Coating
I have always wanted to do this and finally decided since I have my own garage now to make it happen. I have been messing around the past couple days, and today I decided to tackle a spare set of valve covers I had laying around. Sorry for the crappy pics this color is hard to catch what it really looks like, its almost like sonic blue when its in the sun. And the reason I only have a pic of one valve cover is because the other one was still in the oven. Still not 100% perfect but I have a bunch of stuff to continue practicing on. I eventually want to turn this into a little side gig, I am going to be doing a set of VW wheels for a co-worker later this week too, I will post pics of those as well.

Nice color, I had a person do mine. The red wasn't even close (which he said it would be) and it didn't seem to lie smooth. Had parts that looked like it seperated and some orange peel. I just had that sanded down and painted redfire. Held up for about 3 years so far. Only thing thats peeling is around the bolt holes

Dude, that is AWESOME! The valve covers look to be about the same color as your car. Have you held them up to it to see how close you got?

How do you get started powder coating at home? How much money is involved?

I would like to get a bit more practice in, because like I said I am not 100% happy with the results quite yet, but I will definitely be open to some side work. I cant do wheels bigger than 16"s right now because I have a small oven, but valvecovers and other smaller stuff I can fit no problem

Yea paint can hold up fine as long as its done properly, but I am a klutz under the hood and like to drop wrenches and stuff so I like to have a nice thick layer of powder coat protecting everything lol, I destroy paint under the hood.

Frank, I havent held them up to the car yet, but I know already they are a little darker, more like Sonic blue, But I definitely love the color.

I have spent probably about 500$ or so to start up but thats because I had to wire a new outlet in my garage just for the oven. without that probably more like 250-300 to start. I got the oven for free too so that helped.

Looks good. I'm thinking about doing the same thing. I've been looking on craigslist for some used electric ovens. I found a nice 30" oven which should work well.

I just have to convince my wife to say yes since I try to keep her happy .

I just ordered the stuff to start powder coating today. The 2 things left to get are a used oven, which I'm waiting on an email back, and a media blaster which I'm going to pick up after work tonight. Hopefully I can start doing this myself next week!

As long as I get all the fuel out of them, would it be ok to powder coat the fuel rails? I'm just trying to think of stuff that would look good coated.

Yes you should be able to powdercoat them, But I would definitely soak them in soapy water overnight to guarantee no fuel in them, that is what I am going to do.
