Hi everyone,

Quick introduction: I'm based in Germany and currently rebuilding my 2005 Mustang GT 4.6 3V. Getting the right parts over here is a bit painful, so I'm trying to double-check compatibility before I order anything else from the US.

Main question: I'm looking at the Stewart high-flow water pump, but I want to confirm the correct MPN and whether my Mustang uses the long nose or short nose water pump.
Current MPN: STE50046L

Car details:
  • 2005 Mustang GT
  • 4.6L 3V
  • Originally automatic, converted to manual
  • Radiator/water pump/timing refresh being done together

I've seen references to Stewart pumps with different suffixes, and I want to confirm whether the correct one for my car is the L or S suffix version.

Current/planned parts list for the cooling/timing/valvetrain refresh:

  • Stewart high-flow water pump — MPN to confirm
  • Mishimoto radiator — MMRAD-MUS-05
  • Ford Performance / Ford Racing GT500 fan — M-8C607-MSVT
  • Ford Performance timing chain kit — M-6004-463V
  • Boundary billet oil pump gears (MartenWear) - MM-OPG-3V-M
  • Boundary Crank Sprocket - MM-SP-4V-S
  • SMP cam phasers — VVT500 x2
  • ModMax lash adjusters — 24 pcs
  • Trick Flow roller followers — 24 pcs
  • Livernois valve springs — LPP8131133
  • Brenspeed Detroit Rocker Supercharged cams
  • Mahle valve cover gasket set — VS50372
  • Thermostat still deciding, possibly Reische 170°F

Can anyone confirm:

  1. Correct Stewart water pump MPN for a 2005 Mustang GT 4.6 3V
  2. Whether this car uses the long nose or short nose pump
  3. Any obvious compatibility issues in the above parts list

Appreciate any help. Thanks guys!

I don't think there is an option for a long or short water pump, but I wouldn't know as I run an electric pump and the pulley is just a dummy pulley to keep the belt routed properly.

Here's your answer:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/emp-ste50046l/applications
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/emp-ste50046s/applications

EMP-STE50046L
1996 to Early 2001 4.6 2V & 4V applications (87mm from pulley hub to block)
EMP-STE50046S
Late 2001 to 2004 4.6 2V & 4V applications (65mm from pulley hub to block)

I can tell you with 100% certainty (I measured my stock pump) that the 05-10 GT 4.6 3V has the LONG nose style pump so the correct part number is EMP-STE50046L.

You're too generous. I feel privileged to be in a group where there are guys who are far more knowledgeable than me in several areas.

I would recommend against any claimed “high flow” water pumps.

I tried an Edlebrock branded high flow pump with a similar veined design as the one you linked and it performed worse for me. Not sure if it was cavitation, but the Motorcraft unit kept temperatures lower and more consistent FWIW.

You can see the “high flow” design first without the vein backing, and the Motorcraft design second with the backing.

Stock water pump got upgraded significantly it just isn't justifiable to buy the Edelbrock one that costs hundreds more, I was gonna but at that point you are better off buying a electronic water pump.
