I've been having a slightly noticeable gear whine with my 4.10's, which were installed "professionally" over a year ago, mostly on decel, at slower speeds. So, I pulled the cover and had a look. My local mechanic friend thinks the pinion is too deep and the contact pattern is too far into the ring gear. What do you guys think?

Decel whine relates to pinion bearing preload. I've gone through this with two sets of gears. They start out nice and quiet but progressively get worse. In my case it was due to the crush sleeve crushing more when under load during passes at the track. Fixed it with a new set of gears and a solid pinion bearing spacer.

were the crush sleeves that failed the older design (thinner) used with the orange nut or the new HD style (thicker) combined with the new purple nut. I haven't seen any of the newer design fail.

Older. The last gear set I bought had the older style in it too, that was about 8 months ago. I suppose I got some older stock. Prior to that I had 4.56 gears in and one trip to the track with drag radials resulted in moderate decel noise on the trip back. My car is a driver first and that noise had to go, hence the 4.10 gears with a solid spacer.

I have a decel noise from 40mph and higher. At the moment it's not really loud or bothersome. I hope it doesn't get worse. Just had a trutrac installed and was curious if the noise would go away.....nope, noise is still there.

get some marking compound on the gears to get a true look at the pattern. work it past the pinion and back and forth about 10 times, applying load with your hand on the pinion flange. if you cant get your hands on any, lemme know and i could drop a little packet and a brush in an envelope to you.

i am intriqued to bruce's solid spacer. do you mean shims or an actual spacer? just wondering to how many spacers were on hand to find the correct pinion preload. link?
