Well I replaced both my phasers Wednesday, one had a broken pin that held part of the spring up while the other phaser looked ok, replaced them both and everything went well, she started up and ran smoother and was quiet/no phaser tap.
And Friday on my way home from work, the CEL lit up and when I got off the freeway I heard tapping and while I haven't diagnosed the CEL/check engine light... I strongly suspect a phaser failed,

My question to you guys is weather not I sheared the locking pin... When I was torquing the drivers side phaser down, the Tone Wheel turned when I was about halfway through the final 90 turn on the Phasers mounting bolt, does that mean I sheared the locking pin?

By tone ring are you referring to the fingers/reluctor. If it turned then yes you sheared the pins that hold it in place. I just went through this a few months ago. As I understand it the reluctor fingers are used to determine what stroke the first cylinder in the bank is on, compression or exhaust.

Your noise could be from the vct solenoid. They are known to get plugged screens which in turn affects how much oil is going to the phaser itself.

Yeah I was referring to the fingers/reluctor, as I tighten the main phaser bolt, the reluctor turned about 30 degrees and returned by itself when I stopped applying pressure to the main bolt.

I just replace both VCT's last month so I don't think it's the problem in this case.

When you say Pins... Are you talking about the 3 pins in the center of the gear? I would have assumed I sheared the lock pin that's inside the Phaser, behind the gear plate.

Bruce, i thought I applied more than enough oil to the underside of the bolt head before installing it in order to prevent something like this from happening. Is there a way to secure the phasers reluctor so everything stays in place while torquing the phaser mounting bolt?

I was talking about the three pins. It wouldn't of returned if they sheared. Other than paying attention during the torqueing process I don't have an answer as to how to prevent it. When it happened to me I think it was because I had the chains on and cams in place which caused a slight angle. This in turn caused the pins to shear due to the fingers and bolt head not being square. It's only a theory.

Since the reluctor returned, does it seem like the lock pin inside the phaser could have sheared? Or does that not happen to these phasers? The reason I ask about the lock pin is because I assumed it would have kept the reluctor and phaser gear solid since the lock pin would be engaged since there is no oil pressure to force the lock pin out of its hole.

Did you use OEM parts or aftermarket?

Who do you think I am, a responsible person who thinks things through!?!? Of course I bought aftermarket phasers, probably the cheapest ones available that eBay has to offer.

Ive watched that video probably 20 times already, FordTechMakuloco is a very knowledgeable Tech.

Well the noise I thought I heard is gone... Don't know why or how, I gotta get a scanner hooked up to the car and see what triggered the Check Engine Light so I'm not guessing so wildly as to what is wrong.

Well turns out the drivers side phaser had sheared its 3 roll pins during the first time I installed these and the spring assembly fell off the phaser gear as I removed them. Free replacement of course, new phaser didn't rotate while installing and the engine is very quiet and smooth.

well thats good news !
you said you bought cheap phasers , what manufacture ?
they look fucking cheap as all cheap is cheap !

Well the first ones I had thrown the Box away so idk but the new replacement came in a different box and a label with the suppliers company name on it. So honestly I have no idea what actual brand but I did notice the pins on the newest replacement are wider than the first replacements, so I would assume that was an issue they addressed as a result of the issue I had with the first set I bought from them. The new one I installed today has a manufactur date of Oct 2015.

Here's another shot of it, you can see a part number on it, the replacement unit has the same part number except instead of VT at the end, it says VVT.
