Polishing Mac Mufflers

I bought a pair of axleback mufflers from a member on a local forum. Does anyone know if the tailpipes are dipped in chrome? I want to take a 2000 grit sandpaper to the body of the muffler and follow up with some polishing compound. If the tips are chrome, I don't think I can do the same to those. The tips have a few minor scratches I'd like to remove.

No.. do not Sand them.
Use the Buffing kit from Sears. It comes with Jewelers rouge sticks
to buff them, thats what I use, all you need is a drill....

So the tips are chrome? Or is the muffler completely stainless steel?
