I know with out a video or listening to the car it would be difficult to diagnose but do these symptoms sound like a powersterring pump issue: The other morning when I started my car I hear a howling/whining noise. It wasn't a high pitched whine. When I open the hood and listen, the noise is most prominent near the power steering pump. The belt does have 90,000 miles but looks to be in good condition. Steering has not been affected and noise doesn't change when I turn the wheel.

If its power steering, the noise usually changes as you turn the wheel. Just in case check the fluid levels, and make sure the power steering lines aren't pinched. You might get more help if you try to post a video clip.

A old trick is take a really long screwdriver and put the tip [IF you can] against the components on the front of the engine suspected of making the noise and put your ear to the handle of the screwdriver, Of course be careful of the belt, put the tip on the outer case. A really long pry bar will also work. You will be amazed at how well you can hear the bering that is going bad. Again please be
careful

Good

I've used a screwdriver/prybar as a stethescope many times. They work well when you have a straight shot at what you need to listen to. At one time you could actually buy mechanics stethescopes......don't know anymore. Have had mine for 15+ years.

I bought the car to the auto shop on base and although he didn't have time to fix the problem, he did listen with a stethescope and said the noise was comming from the P/S pump.
