None of you panic because this is NOT a done deal yet. I'm just considering options.

I have been offered a contract design job in Bakersfield, California for about 8 months. Lots of money and fairly decent hours/working conditions. My main concerns are:

1.) What is Bakersfield really like? I asked my sponsors over the weekend and they fell over laughing so I'm not too keen on the place already.

2.) Cost of living? Or more importantly....cost of renting, eating, gasoline, hookers, etc.

3. Am I going to be able to stand Bakersfield for eight months? Or do they shoot loud mouths from Texas in the streets?

For "lots of money" I could take Bakersfield for 8 months. Cost of living is more than Texas, but the money/col might be worth it. You wouldn't be living there forever...

just buy a Buck Owens/Hee Haw shirt before you go. LOLOLOLOL
Somehow....I knew that one was out there somewhere. :samuri:

Final numbers on the offer are in. $60 per hour; $30 of that is per diem; both paid weekly. Minimum hours of fifty hours per week; overtime at $90 per hour after forty hours. As long as you get your fifty....they don't care how many days you work. Hourly and per diem is paid by contract placement agency. Actual contractor pays an additional per diem of $119 per day at the beginning of each month. Both per diems are, of course, not taxable.

I was briefly digging around on Craigslist this morning and found a two bedroom/two bath/two car detached garage on the northwest side of town not far from the job location for $750 per month. Anyone know if this sounds about right for that area?
