Whatever you do and however much you agree to pay...........get it done by someone with a good reputation and done right the first time. Alot of potential for problems in that list so you may have to pay the piper to get all that done CORRECTLY!

It looks to me like they don't want your business so they gave you a high quote and left the add ons to ensure you are scared off.

I don't know, he had quite a laundry list of stuff to do. Some items were kind of open ended. Shops that are good, aren't cheap, and they are busy. The shop I use kept all the guys they hired last year over the winter and are already fully booked.

I know, I have had to take it from certain shops before because of the estimate doubling and shoddy work (actually posted about it in here). My situation with my car has been never ending since I got it and I'm getting sick and tired of it. I'm almost to the point where I just want to say f*ck it and leave it in the garage as is.

I will definitely give them a call. I'm waiting on Brenspeed to get back to me right now.

I can very well see this, actually. Which honestly, with the kind of estimate they gave me, I don't really mind...

Seems really high to me... For piece of mind, I would definately get a second opinion.
Labor rates today are anywhere from $65-$95 per hour. Ok now, let's take an average middle of
the road rate here of $80.00. Holy crap man that's approximately 63 hours of work quoted.

For comparison, to remove an engine, remove heads, then reassemble the heads back on to a new short block is only running me about 27 hours of labor.

I added up the "loose ends" to whatever extra I think they may charge, and with MY idea of reasonable hours for certain tasks it comes to about $6100 + tax to do my list. And that is based on their estimate of relocating the ECU (which I believe was 3-4 hours). Based on your average of $80 an hour this would be a little over 76 hours...

For comparison, to remove an engine, remove heads, then reassemble the heads back on to a new short block is only running me about 27 hours of labor.

See I feel like that would be just about as much work, maybe a little more with regards to everything except the ECU relocation (since I did not realize how much work needs to be put in extending wires and what not). Hopefully Brenspeed gives me a good quote. If not I'll check with Beef and then possibly a member on here that knows their stuff but are fairly close to Ohio. I wouldn't mind paying an actual person instead of feeding money down the line of employees at this shop, it would be a win win for both.

Have you ever polished an unpolished supercharger? Holy balls that's a shitload of work and time. R&Ring an engine "sounds" like big work, and it is, but its not real time consuming.

OP, have you gotten any more quotes? I really don't think the first one was way out of line. Maybe some of you guys have a friend or a naive shop owner that will do a lot of little work for free, but a professional shop owner has a responsibility to make sure a customer knows that piddly work adds up, and make sure that he doesn't end up doing it for nothing.

I must be in the wrong business if 6200 for less then a weeks worth of work is reasonable. I need to go back to school and get certified and charge prices like that. To me it sounds like the mechanic thinks his shop can charge rates that a hospital does.

I have not, no. But like I said, they Charged me between $100-$140 last time if I remember correctly and now they want double.

And I'm working on other quotes at the moment. It is hard because where I am at there are a lot of small shops that claim they know what they are doing and they may, but IMO do sloppy work. Now their prices are way, WAY cheaper, and I understand you get what you pay for, but I think a number in between what they small shops would charge me and what this shop wants to charge me would be a lot more reasonable. I also understand they have a lot of overhead, employees to pay, and profit to make, but this seems through the roof to me...

What the place used to do is advertise a cheaper rate than anywhere else but add more hours to make up for the cheaper rate. Now they upped the rate, but never backed down the hours imo

I didn't really see anything you were doing that could be done in a shoddy craftsmenship except maybe the relocation if they didn't do the wiring the right way. Everything else is basically removing and installing new parts in its place.

Do you think the shop owner takes home that $6200 and blows it on Cheetos and beer? Hell no, it takes a shitload of money just to make the 'nut' at a shop. Employees, tools, electricity, insurance, supplies, and inventory are all crazy high. That's why reputable shop time is expensive.

I'm gonna bail on this thread, but OP, let us know how much it costs after all the work is done. I'm curious to see how close the estimate was.

Just call the number i listed for you and talk to Brian...these guys know high preformance mustangs....they know what they are doing and they are great guys to work with Im sure his qoute for labor will be more to your liking and his shop must be fairly close to you if your in central ohio. Most importantly his work is done right and your car will be right when it comes out of his shop

Nobody ever wants to think about this part of business. They just want to bitch about how expensive something costs.

If it's $89/hour, at least 55% of that goes to pay the guy doing the work. When I was a manager at a highly respected security guard company our guys got paid about 60% of the hourly bill rate. So if a guy made $10/hour we billed about $16.50/hr.

I know a local mechanic at the subaru dealer. He's the best they got. Their hourly is 90. I promise you he sees nothing even approaching 45 gross per hour.

When I worked as a subcontractor at my last job, computer work, I got about $16-18/hr. gross and my company was billing over $40/hr. for me.

I know exactly what goes into running a business, my whole family is business owners. I'm not ignorant on want goes into the work and what goes into the shop, but wouldn't you ask questions if you were quoted 14 hours for something the manufacturer says only takes 2 hours?

And I know that most of the employees doing the wrenching at the shop are not getting paid more than $20 an hour.

It has also been about 4 days since I have heard from them about my concerns on the estimate and to see if we can work on the numbers. Thinking I should grab my stuff and keep looking. Hopefully Brenspeed pulls through a good number and if not I will take to Beef

I know exactly what it takes My family owns the largest dyno tuning center in the USA for motorcycles specializing in Harley Davidsons. We build motors tune bikes an are a major etailer. In my opinion that price is still way out of line. I guarrantee you that out of the 6200 they are taking in 50 percent of it is not going to the guy intalling the parts. Sounds like a 3 day job even if it took 5 days you think there paying the employee 3100 a week no way. For proof or company is www.cyclesolutionsonline.com

Anyone here think it can be done in a few days? I'm in my last semester of College and I have spring break next week. If so, I'm debating on maybe offering someone on here a decent amount to do the work for me and pay for their hotel/gas? I have access to a shop with a lift that I can use 24/7 and all the basic tools. I can also offer a helping hand.
