Rear brakes, what to do?

I just bought some stoptech/saleen 4 piston front brakes. I have to replace the rear calipers and rotors on my car as well (car was left to sit and they seized). I was just going to get stock rear calipers and slotted discs to match the front. Does anyone have any other ideas for a similar cost?

For what it's worth, the FR500C/BOSS302R and FR500s use the stock rear brakes w/ slotted rotors and race-friendly pads.

It depends on what you are doing with the car.

If it is only driven on the street and never on a road course then stock rear rotors should be fine.

Yeah it will see some light track duty (maybe 2 track days a year). Most everyone I've talked to has said the stock rear calipers are fine with the right pad, but I wanted to get a second opinion.

A lot of us in this and other Mustang forums only use the stock rear rotors and calipers.

On the front you have already gone the BBK route so the other things to consider are DOT4 fluid (e.g. Motul or ATE), front brake cooling, and possibly SS lines.

Your pad choices are large and really depend on how much you want to trade off street use versus track use.

Willwood makes a nice setup for the rear but be prepared to spend > $1500. If you're doing 2 track days a year, stock is fine.

Would it be worth it to upgrade to steedas 13" rear brake kit? The car sees the road course / back roads as much as possible.

Agreed. They'd look awesome behind the new wheels, but the plain fact is that the weak link on the S197 is up front, not in the back. I heat-check the front rotors probably twice each year, but only once in three years have I cracked a rear. That said, with those ginormous 19" wheels, the stock rear brakes might just look a little too "cute"...

Ok cool. The stock brakes would most definitely look "cute" behind the new wheels. LOL

Now I just need to find a way to run brake cooling ducts.

Hmmm, those wouldn't work for me since I am literally in the process of switching to the CDC aggressive splitter (no more lower grill, more shiney FMIC :D )

I was thinking of doing something like DusteRT had done

This is a stupid question but where would I buy some rear calipers? No one seems to sell them online. Local auto parts store? Ford dealership? I'm worried about paying too much at the dealership.

I know you're looking for rear calipers, but check the New Take Off (NTO) website or call to see what's available.

You can try fleabay or the dealer. The last time I tried buying calipers at a local store, they stated the car was "too new" and there was no reason they should be needing replacement.
To which I replied, "Oh yeah?"

Maybe we need a cooling system for the rear brakes as well.

Anyone tried it?

Last I saw, the FR500S had rear ducts, but they were just the duct hoses under the car, tie-wrapped to the lower control arms... I honestly don't know how badly the rears are going to fare without cooling, I've only worn out one set and cracked a second, compared to about seven or eight front sets...

That part sounds easy enough, but I worry about how "clean" the intake is going to be. Seems like you're going to pick up a ton of dust and debris from under the car just to spit it at your brakes.

I would think that a better route would be feeding the duct from the rocker panel area, much like the C5 Z06 did. I would love to try this with a modified NACA duct...you know, when I have spare time (ugh...).

If my car was not a daily driver I'd like to try bringing it from either a scoop installed on the vertical body line just ahead of the rear wheels or from a NACA duct in the side rear window.

Yeah, the C-scoop area in the rear quarter is the obvious place...I just haven't seen a scoop there that I like. Never been much for that whole Shelby-style scoop on the Mustangs (of old or new).

Agent47 has the hot ticket with the quarter window scoop, but I already have Silver Horse louvers there (and there's no way I'd replace them).

Here's a scary idea...a couple of years ago Kenny Brown came out with a concept Mustang that had rear quarters styled after the 1969 Mustang. While his quarter panels also completely covered the windows, he had a scoop in the upper flank of the panel. I bet a well placed NACA duct there would look awesome! You also wouldn't have to completely re-do the entire quarter panel...just cut it.

Of course...if one ends up not liking this, returning the car to its original state after the experiment would be a real PITA. See...scary (but I bet cool as hell!).

Best,
-j
